Edith Brown later

Edith (Steck) Brown, was surrounded by her family when she died April 5, 2014, at the Missoula Village Health Care Center. She was 77.

Edith's birthday was Jan. 1, 1937. She was born and raised on the family farm north of Edmonton, near Jarvie, Alberta.

It was on a vacation trip to Missoula and a blind date at age 18 that she met the love of her life, Braxton Brown. Three weeks later Braxton sent her an engagement ring and a bus ticket in the mail. That was the beginning of their 57 years of a beautiful marriage and the blessings of three children, nine grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.

Edith's legacy is love. Edith was not just “married”; she taught us the meaning of being a “loving wife.” She was not just a “mother”; she was our “Mom.” And she was always the Cub Scout and Girl Scout Mom, Swim Team Mom, Baseball Mom, and the “School Room Mother” too. She was our biggest fan at all our sports, music and any events we were a part of. She loved her husband, children and grandchildren with a depth of love that goes beyond words.

Edith's 35 years as a professional baker and wedding cake decorator were legendary in Missoula and throughout the Northwest. Her reputation as “The Best,” especially for her famous Carrot Cake, was second to none. Many nice people still remind our family how special their wedding day was because of Mom.

Edith loved gardening, flowers and birds. Her beautiful yard and garden was a haven for her many songbirds and hummingbirds. She also loved her fun times as a member of the Red Hat Society.

Edith was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church and called Jesus her Lord and Savior. She lived this truth in love. With God's help, she left this world a better place than she found it.

Edith is survived by her loving husband, Braxton Brown; her brother, Herbie Steck, of Edson, Alberta; children, Braxton Brown Jr. (III), Adeline Suzette “Sue” Job and Mary Emily Brown; grandchildren, Braxton Brown (IV), Brenton Brown, Briana Watson, Ryan Job, Meaghan Job, Jordan Rauk, Kendall Rauk and Logan Rauk; great-grandchildren, Champ Watson, Hayli Brown, Barrett Brown, Oakleigh Watson, Braxton Brown (V), Annabel Brown and Ember Job.

Edith was preceded in death by her parents, Henry Steck and Marbel (Therriault) Steck; brothers, Henry Jr., Allen and Frank; sisters, Alice, Tillie, Elizabeth, Marion, Freda, Jean and Ann; also her loving daughter-in-law, Diana Brown; and grandson, Jonathan Brown.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 14, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Missoula, with a reception following.

There is no “in lieu” of flowers. Mom loved flowers!
