Burke tosses perfect game as Cd'A sweeps Moscow

COEUR d'ALENE - Sophomore Breana Burke pitched a five-inning perfect game as Coeur d'Alene shellacked Moscow 22-0 in the first game of a doubleheader en route to a sweep of the Bears on Tuesday at Larry Schwenke Field.

Mariah Montee pitched a one-hitter as the Vikings (5-2) won the second game 11-0.

Burke struck out 13 of the 15 batters she faced.

"The secret to her success was getting ahead in the count," Coeur d'Alene coach Larry Bieber said. "She was just really hitting her spots."

Burke also went 4 for 5 and drove in five runs in the opener. Sydni Parker was 3 for 5 with four RBIs, and Brooke Albertson hit a three-run home run in a 10-run second inning.

Montee struck out seven in the second game, allowing only a third-inning single. Albertson went 3 for 3 with two RBIs. Kylie Rasmussen had five hits and drove in four runs on the day.

Coeur d'Alene plays at Shadle Park on Thursday.

SANDPOINT - Brittany Gay hit a three-run homer to highlight an 11-run outburst in the second inning of the first game, and the host Timberwolves went on to sweep the Bulldogs at Sandpoint Middle School.

Vanessa Shippy went 4 for 4 with six runs and six RBIs on the day for Lake City (7-2).

Jordyn McCracken pitched a one-hitter and drove in two runs in the opener for the Timberwolves. Kimmie Cook went 2 for 2 with two runs and three RBIs.

Hailey Jackson went 2 for 3 with two runs and four RBIs in the second game for Lake City.

Lily Martin singled with two out in the third inning of the first game for Sandpoint (1-6), and Morgan Bluemer singled leading off the second in the nightcap for the Bulldogs.

Lake City plays a doubleheader at Post Falls on Friday.

POST FALLS - The visiting Hawks scored five runs in the top of the seventh inning, then held on as the Trojans scored three times in the bottom of the inning, and had the bases loaded before Lakeland got the final out.

Reilly Williams had a two-run double in the first inning and a two-run single in the seventh for Lakeland (2-5). Katie Kastning added an RBI triple in the fourth and a run-scoring single in the seventh.

Katie McDermott hit a three-run home run in the third inning for Post Falls (0-3) to tie the game at 3. Sam Hammond and Carlin Rosetti each had RBI singles in the Trojans' seventh-inning rally.

"The kids could have quit, because of where we've been, but we battled back, and just came up a little bit short," Post Falls coach Jack Foster said.

The two teams play again today at 4 p.m., this time at Lakeland.

Kelsey Auer and Haylee Waddell combined on a three-inning no-hitter in the second game for St. Maries (4-4, 2-0 CIL), which travels to Kellogg on Thursday.

COEUR d'ALENE - Graham Thompson drove in five runs, all in the second game as the Vikings swept the Bears at Ted Page Field.

"We played pretty lethargic in the first game," Coeur d'Alene coach Nick Rook said. "We need to figure some stuff out on the mound. But the kids battled back in the first game and found a way to grind out some runs. We've got a ways to go to get where we need to be."

In the first game, Moscow built a 4-1 lead before the Vikings scored six in the bottom of the fifth inning, keyed by a two-run single by Gibson Green to tie the game at 4. Michael Hicks and Devin Kluss followed with RBIs to give Coeur d'Alene a 7-4 lead after the inning.

Green and Kluss drove in two runs each in the second game for Coeur d'Alene (8-3), which travels to Lewiston on Saturday at noon.

SANDPOINT - Dom Conigliaro went 3 for 3 with two doubles and three runs batted in in the first game for the Timberwolves (6-4) in a sweep of the Bulldogs at War Memorial Field.

Grant Wade also went 3 for 3 for Lake City.

"It was good for Dom to extend some innings in a start," Lake City coach Travis Georgius said.

In the second game, Ermias Mularski went 3 for 3 with a double, a triple and two RBI.

"Ermias hit the ball pretty hard," Georgius said. "Early on, he was a little inconsistent, but he squared up, which is really good to see."

Sandpoint dipped to 1-7.

Lake City hosts Post Falls in a doubleheader on Saturday.

POST FALLS - Kris Jackson hit a three-run home run in the third inning and an RBI double in the seventh, leading the Hawks past the Trojans in a nonleague game.

"Both teams played pretty well," Post Falls coach Dustin Frank said. "We just made a few mistakes and Lakeland capitalized on those mistakes we made. It was really nice to see our kids battle and keep battling until the end."

Dylan Piva struck out five and Logan Bruner had three hits for Lakeland (4-4).

Jacob Koski had a two-run double in the third and Carter Howard a two-run double in the fifth for Post Falls (7-2).

"Dylan did a nice job on the mound for them," Frank said. "We had back-to-back hits to get the tying run on base in the seventh. It was nice to see us battle all the way to the end."

The teams will play again today at Lakeland at 4.

Lakeland's Bayley, Cd'A's Callahan win

MOSCOW - Derek Bayley of Lakeland was boys medalist, and Emily Callahan of Coeur d'Alene was girls medalist at the Moscow Invitational at the University of Idaho Course.

Post Falls' boys and Coeur d'Alene's girls won team titles.

Bayley shot a 3-under par 69, beating Joe Baldeck of Clarkson on the second playoff hole with a par.

Callahan shot a 77, winning by five strokes over Sammi Jo Spring of Lewiston.

"Emily's score was a quality score," Coeur d'Alene coach Bryan Duncan said. "The others we'll get where we need to be, but that was a good score for Emily."

Led by Corey Beaver's 73, Post Falls' boys shot a 305, three strokes better than Clarkston with a 308. Lakeland was third at 312.

"None of our boys had their best game today, but still figured out how to play when not scoring at their best," Post Falls coach Maria Kostina said. "I'm really proud of them for bringing what we've been working on the past three weeks to the tournament."

"We had a successful day," Lakeland coach Mario Maddy said. "I don't think we shot that well in a long time (in the boys tournament)."

Coeur d'Alene's girls shot a 389, winning by 16 over Lewiston. Lakeland was third at 411.

POST FALLS - The Post Falls No. 1 girls doubles team of Lexi Niles and Maraya Deusser bounced back from a loss in the first set to beat Lakeland's Olivia Kinnick and Madison Meckle 5-7, 6-0, 11-9.

"The girls started out a little shaky," Post Falls coach Kirk Hartzell said. "It was only the second time playing together and struggled making good shots. They had a good talk over the match break and battled for the tiebreak."

Post Falls travels to Lewiston on Thursday.
