Hunting down the dreaded stinging wasps
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 10 years, 9 months AGO
Over the weekend, I took the advice of Maureen Dolan and put out a wasp trap. She said if you can trap a queen or two before they lay their eggs, it just may make a difference in the ability to enjoy being outdoors in the yard this summer. I don't think much about flying insects this time of year since they're not noticeable but thought I'd give it a try.
Within a day or two, the orange juice in the trap attracted at least 10 flies and a wasp. I'm not an insect expert, so I'm not sure if it was a queen wasp or just one of her minions in search of a suitable castle to raise her thousands of young. With sunshine and 70-degree days this week, it's easy to visualize summer just around the corner.
Another of those "I Love Where I Live" events celebrates Arbor Day with the annual Free Tree Day at Q'emiln Park in Post Falls on Saturday. Coordinated by the Post Falls Parks and Urban Forestry departments and made possible by sponsors J-U-B Engineering, Pioneer Title Company, Coldwell Banker, Panhandle State Bank, Cannon Hill, Starbucks, Northland Nursery, Super 1 Foods and volunteers, people can choose up to three bare-root trees. Several varieties will be available from 8:45 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. It's not just for Post Falls residents; our neighbors are welcome to come adopt a tree for their yards, too!
Places to go and things to do: Friday is the third annual Bryan Bounce at Coeur d'Alene High School from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. to benefit Bryan Elementary School.
Also Friday, St. Vinny's Comedy Night at The Coeur d'Alene Resort, 6-9 p.m., features professional comedians (as opposed to those of us who just think we're funny) and hors d'oeuvres. Call Barb Smalley to see if the event's sold out yet: (208) 416-4716.
Saturday, there will be candidates galore around town so take the opportunity to meet them before the May primary election. The NIPAC meet and greet luncheon is at the Hagadone Event Center at 11:30 a.m. From noon to 3 p.m., there's a meet and greet at American Legion Post 143 in Post Falls (Poleline and Syringa).
The annual Lincoln Day Dinner, hosted by the Kootenai County GOP, will be 5 p.m. at The Coeur d'Alene Resort, featuring Gov. Butch Otter and Sen. Russ Fulcher, gubanatorial candidate.
Happy birthday today to Nicole Medlock, Jodi McKenzie, John Hays, Kaleb Peck, Carol Graham, Marvin Erickson, Joan Phelps, Cynthia Taggart and Tom Messina. The same tomorrow to Dianna Scott, Sandra Borg, Rosie Diana, Sharon Finnerty, Kathryn Rosia and Nancy Benjamin.
On Friday, Idella Mansfield, Lonna Duncan, Patrick Jacobs, David Bond, Doreen Johnson, Karen Reagan and DiAnna Macklin will celebrate. April 12, Mallory Stubblefield-Martinez, Russell Heistuman (50!), Connie Munk and Kevin Reed will kick up their heels.
Look for Madison Leonard, Evalyn Adams, Kathy Behm, Sandy Robertson and Corbin Messina to blow out their candles on Sunday.
