WRESTLING
Ridge Lovett from Team Real Life won a national title at the Cliff Keen USA Wrestling Folkstyle Nationals April 4-7 in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
More than 2,000 wrestlers age 6 and up represented over 40 states. The event is the first leg of the prestigious national triple crown.
Lovett, a seventh-grader from River City Middle School, won the Schoolboy 77-pound division. Lovett, ranked No. 2 by USA Wrestling, squared off against No. 1-ranked Eric Barnett from Wisconsin in the championship match. Down 1-0 with 30 seconds remaining, Lovett scored an escape to tie it up and scored a takedown with two seconds remaining to claim the national title.
"Ridge found a way to win when it counted," said Dad and Team Real Life coach Lonnie Lovett. "His ability to make things happen and come out on top is one of the biggest things that separates Ridge from other wrestlers."
Lovett joins fellow TRL wrestlers Brelane Huber and Cierra Foster, who won National Folkstyle Girls titles last month in Oklahoma City.
Team Real Life wrestler Jason Burchell reached All-American status, placing sixth in the Schoolboy 128-pound division. Burchell, an eighth-grader at Timberlake Junior High, battled through a severe muscle tear in his shoulder he sustained in his first match at nationals. Burchell overcame a 9-2 deficit to win in overtime in the quarterfinals over Colton Vest from Iowa. "Jason wrestled the whole tournament with one arm; it was painful to watch," Lonnie Lovett said. "His goal was to be an All-American and he wasn't going to be denied. He's one tough kid; I couldn't be more proud."
Colton Kazmierczak of Team Real Life placed third in the USA Wrestling postseason nationals in Las Vegas on March 30. Kazmierczak, in the Middle School 136-pound division, lost to James Noel of Damascus, Ark., in the semifinals, then came back and defeated Mario Neblina of Arizona in the consolation championships by fall in 39 seconds. Kazmierczak is an eighth-grader at Genesis Prep and will wrestle for Post Falls High School next year.
