MOSES LAKE - Scoring came early and often for Moses Lake (1-0, 3-2-1) in its Columbia Basin Big Nine opener against Eisenhower.

Senior forward Adrian Vasquez recorded a hat trick to lead the Chiefs over the Cadets, 5-2.

Moses Lake made good on several opportunities in the fist half, beginning with Sean Cotton's score off a rebound five minutes into the match. The Chiefs' aggressive play was on full display as Moses Lake led 4-0 at halftime.

"We're fit and we're aggressive, we always have been," head coach Bill Bertram said. "Sometimes that works to our disadvantage when they have breakaways and we leave some unmarked guys on defense, but generally the more pressure you put on the more ball control you'll have."

Vasquez scored two of his three goals in the first half, while fellow senior forward Johnny Cortez added another.

"Johnny and Adrian balance each other," Bertram said. "Just think if you were playing against them you have two real threats at any given time. Adrian he's a worker and he's real hard on himself. He sets himself to high standards and scoring two goals a game is well within his reach."

Vasquez capped off his hat trick with 22 minutes remaining in the second half to push Moses Lake's lead to 5-0.

Although Vasquez starred against Eisenhower, Bertram knows that with his offense scoring can come from anywhere.

"We're an unselfish team as well," he said. "Adrian gets balls up front because people slot him nice balls and let him do his juju on them and he's good at it."

Moses Lake's much improved defense held the Cadets scoreless for a majority of the contest. Eisenhower was able to score twice late after the match was out of reach.

Moses Lake will travel to face Wenatchee Friday at 7 p.m. The Panthers began the season 0-3, but have won two out of their last three matches.
