EPHRATA - An Ephrata man who crashed into an irrigation canal with his three young sons in a pickup on March 30 was still missing on Saturday at the same time his eight year old son was being laid to rest.
According to Grant County Sheriff's Department Public Information officer Kyle Foreman, deputies and others are still monitoring the stretch of canal where they would expect a body to surface. The fear is that Scott Kolves, 45, became entangled in canal bottom debris.
Comprehensive search and recovery efforts ended Monday evening, Foreman said. But deputies and irrigation district personnel continue to monitor the canal for Scott's body to resurface.
The accident occurred at around 3:25 p.m. Scott Kolves and his boys were going fishing when their pickup went into the canal near Summer Falls Dam south of Coulee City.
Witnesses fishing nearby said they saw all four occupants exit the vehicle into the water. They were able to pull two of the three children, Kadan, 12, and Kyler, 10, out of the canal to safety.
Emergency responders were able to pull the third child, Korey, 8. from the water, but could not locate the father. All three children were taken to Samaritan Hospital in Moses Lake where Korey died.
Kadan and Kyler were treated for non-life threatening injuries and released to their mother.
Grant County Search and Rescue Unit, Grant County Fire District 5, and Moses Lake Fire Department Search and Rescue divers searched the canal on the 30th but had to suspend the search at sundown. The search resumed the morning of the 31st.
According for Foreman, there was still one interview scheduled on Friday in the investigation into how this accident may have happened. He expected a report to be completed this week.
"From all we have, there is absolutely nothing to indicate this was something other than a terribly tragic accident," he said.
Grant County Sheriff Tom Jones said: "This is a heartbreaking and tragic loss. Our sincerest condolences to the family during this extremely difficult time."
