Two former Bonners Ferry men were indicted Wednesday by a federal grand jury in Boise for a string of bank heists and firing on pursuing law officers.

Nathan Paul Davenport, 34, and Matthew Taber Annable, 39, are charged with bank larceny involving the use of a deadly weapon, use of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony, two counts of bank larceny and conspiracy to commit larceny. The two suspects were apprehended Jan. 12 in Orem, Utah and are being held in Wyoming pending trial.

The indictment covers seven automated teller machine break-ins between Dec. 7, 2013 and Jan. 10. Three heists occurred in southern Idaho, while the others occurred in Utah, Colorado and Wyoming.

Officers came under fire from a Ruger .223-caliber semiautomatic rifle while pursuing the duo following the Jan. 10 heist at Idaho First Bank in McCall. The indictment does not specify who fired the tactical weapon at law officers.

All told, Davenport and Annable netted $196,240 in the ATM break-ins, according to the indictment. So far, only $85,301 has been seized from the defendants.

The Idaho Statesman reports that Davenport and Annable are suspected in at least 20 ATM thefts across the United States during a 16-month period. More than $500,000 was taken in the break-ins.

Davenport was linked to the string of break-ins because of the distinctive after-market accessories on his truck, which was used in ATM heists in Texas, according to the Statesman's report.

Committing bank larceny by use of a dangerous weapon is punishable by as long as 25 years in prison, while using a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony is punishable no less than 10 years and up to life. The simple bank larceny charge and conspiracy charges can result in 10 year and five years, respectively.
