Hawks plate 39 in IEL sweep
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 10 years, 9 months AGO
SANDPOINT - It was a softball game with a football score, as Lakeland battered Sandpoint 12-8 and 27-14 in a 4A Inland Empire League softball doubleheader opener on Saturday at Sandpoint Middle School.
"All we needed was two touchdowns and we would have won it," joked Bulldogs head coach Derek Dickinson after the second game.
Brooke Leatham led the Lakeland offense with five hits and eight runs scored on the day, while Kari Prockish finished with six hits and two wins on the mound, as the Hawks (6-5, 2-0 4A IEL) were able to string together a lot of hits and capitalized on a handful of Bulldog errors.
Sandpoint (2-9, 0-2) led 2-0 heading into the fourth inning of game one, before things began to fall apart. Led by Topi Elsfelder's four hits, Sandpoint was able to produce plenty of offense, including banging out 27 hits on the day, but had trouble putting up zeroes on the scoreboard defensively.
"Lakeland got the timing down on our pitchers and put the barrel on the ball, hit some line drives," said Dickinson. "We let the first game slip away. We scored 14 runs, which feels good, and we hit one through nine. Tope is coming around."
Sandpoint is at Moscow on Tuesday.
Lakeland hosts Coeur d'Alene on Thursday.

LEWISTON - Sophomore Mariah Montee hit a two-run single in the fifth inning of the second game and was the winning pitcher, but her pep talk earlier in the game might have had the biggest influence as the visiting Vikings went on to sweep the Bengals in 5A Inland Empire League play at Airport Park.
Coeur d'Alene trailed 2-0 after the first inning when Montee adressed her teammates.
"In the second inning we were behind, and you could see their attitude completely change," Coeur d'Alene coach Larry Bieber said. "We were just a little bit in love with ourselves (before that)."
Kayla Albertson's three-run double highlighted a four-run second inning that put the Vikings (8-2, 3-0) ahead to stay.
In the first game, Breana Burke pitched a three-hit shutout with six strikeouts, and Kylie Rasmussen and Analisa Raynor each drove in a pair of runs.
Kayla Albertson had six hits on the day and Brooke Albertson added five for Coeur d'Alene, which travels to Post Falls on Wednesday for a doubleheader.
"We were hitting the ball all over the place," Bieber said. "And (shortstop) Sydni Parker had some great plays in the field."
