EPHRATA - The public is being asked to stay away from an Ephrata nursing home and hospital after two residents recently died because of a flu outbreak.
Grant County Health Officer Dr. Alexander Brzezny stated in a release that the staff at Garden Oasis Assisted Living is working with county health officials to contain the outbreak.
The center is part of the Columbia Basin Hospital. Charge Nurse Lori Bolin said that the public should stay away from the hospital if they can, and would be required to wear a mask over the mouth if they do enter.
She said she does not know how long the restrictions will be in place. Staff at Garden Oasis declined to confirm the deaths or provide the names of the deceased.
According to a release form the county health department, no one who is sick will be allowed to enter the assisted living center.
"We are deeply saddened to learn about the deaths of the two residents. The staff and hospital administration have been extremely cooperative and have put measures in place to contain the outbreak." Brzezny said.
No other hospital staff could be reached for comment.
Symptoms of the flu include temperatures greater than 100 degrees Fahrenheit, with a cough and/or sore throat, according to the county health department.
