Flathead’s Matt Quist came into Tuesday’s Flathead A Invitational at Legends Stadium with some doubts.

“I didn’t feel good, it was cold,” he said.

“I was watching a lot of people not having as good a day (in their events) as in the past.”

Those early indicators could have been a troubling sign for the senior. But as things turned out, they had no bearing on what he would achieve this day.

Quist cleared a personal best 6-6 on his third attempt and followed with three near-misses at 6-7 to win the high jump.

“I caught it with my butt,” he said of his efforts at 6-7.

He was that close.

He just ran out of attempts.

Entering the competition, Quist was one of four jumpers in Montana to have made a state-best 6-3 this spring. Now he’s easily the state leader.

“This raises the bar for my goals,” he said.

His biggest goal — 6-11. That would give him the school record. Troy Wassink currently holds that standard at 6-10 1/2 set in 2002.

“I was happy with my approach,” Quist said afterwards.

His jump coach — Bill Epperly — also helped him make slight adjustments with his form as the bar was raised higher and higher.

“He’s phenomenal,” Quist said of Epperly.

“He pays attention to all the little details.”

Epperly was also Wassink’s jump coach.

Quist started his day at 5-9. His first miss came at 6-6.

“The one thing I like about jumping in Kalispell is everyone is so supportive,” he said.

“All the teams from around the Flathead Valley are that way.”

Glacier’s Lonnie Sherman tried for a personal best in the pole vault, but for a second-straight meet settled for a winning height of 13-6.

The senior had two solid vaults at 14-0, but failed to clear it.

He started at 13-0 and made 13-6 with ease on his second attempt. That might have been his best jump of the day form wise.

“Yeah, it’s more mental,” he said of his 14-0 barrier in meets.

“In practice I make it every day. I want everything to be perfect (during the vault), but it doesn’t have to be.”

Coming in, Sherman was tied with four other vaults for the top height in the state at 13-6.

For Whitefish’s Marlow Schulz, it appears she’s way ahead of schedule.

The senior sprinter, despite not being challenge, ripped off a 58.7 time to win the 400. She also anchored the 400-relay team to a second-place finish.

It was her first meet of the season.

“I’m excited about that,” she said of her 400 time.

“Especially in these conditions for as cold as it is. That’s what I’m usually running about mid-season.”

Schulz is a three-time Class A state champ in the 100 and has won state in the 200 and 400 the past two years.

She won state in the 800 her freshman season.

Her margin of victory Tuesday was nearly five seconds.

“I’m kind of used to that,” she said of not being pushed.

“I’m able to push myself. I do a lot of training alone.”

Schulz is hoping to dip under 56 seconds in the 400 and turn in a time between 2:10 and 2:15 in the 800.

“Those are events I will be doing in college (at St. John’s),” she said.

“So I’m focusing on the 400 and 800 this year.”

The invitational had one individual win three events — Glacier’s Evan Epperly. The senior sprinter had the top times in the 100 (11.38), 200 (23.5) and 400 (50.47).

Winning two events were Sylas Schutt of Flathead, 1,600 (4:35.8) and 3,200 (10:03.72); Monica White of Flathead, 100 (13.31) and 200 (28.13); Bailey Smith of Glacier, 800 (2:29.49) and 1,600 (5:32.90); and Shauna Williams of Glacier, discus (118-1) and long jump (16-10.5).
