Othello boys soccer shuts out Ephrata
CONNOR VANDERWEYST | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 10 years, 7 months AGO
OTHELLO - Othello boys soccer (1-0, 7-1) opened CWAC play with a 2-0 win over Ephrata recently.
Hugo Martinez and Khristian Herrera each notched a goal in the victory. Angel Rangel and Diego Suarez combined to earn a shutout for the Huskies between the posts.
"I told the team we are 0-0 in league and this is where it all starts," head coach Bernie Garza said. "Now all the games count towards league standings."
According to Scoreczar.org, Othello is now ranked fifth in state among 2A schools.
Othello opened the scoring against the Tigers in the 35th minute after Edwin Alvarez was fouled 18 yards from the goal.
Martinez elected to take the direct kick and rocketed a shot past Ephrata's Diego Garcia to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead. It was Martinez's eighth goal of the season.
Co-captains Jason Rodriguez and Jacob Quiroz dominated the midfield for Othello and made sure the Husky attackers had plenty of opportunities.
"They are the reason our season has been successful so far," Garza said. "Object of the game is simple. Possess the ball and don't let the other team have it and score goals. And when they do get it pressure the ball so they lose possession."
Othello was without defender and co-captain Miguel Gonzales, who has been sidelined with a hamstring injury, but Garza expects him to return to the lineup soon.
Currently, Othello has scored the most goals in the CWAC this season with 28. Which is 10 more than Ellensburg's second most total of 18.
The Huskies have also allowed the second least goals in the CWAC.
Othello is scheduled for three matches this week. Tuesday on the road against East Valley (Yakima), Thursday at home against Ellensburg and Saturday on the road against Prosser.
The match against Ellensburg is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
