Moses Lake shuts out Pirates
CONNOR VANDERWEYST | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 10 years, 7 months AGO
MOSES LAKE - During the first half, the vaunted Davis defense performed as advertised.
The second half?
Not so much.
Moses Lake (3-0, 5-2-1) was able to score three second half goals and handed Davis its first loss of the season, 3-0.
"Everything came together," head coach Bill Bertram said. "We've been playing bits and pieces throughout the year. Wenatchee, a little better. Today was our finest job for sure."
The Chiefs defense has been steadily improving all season and finally recorded their first shutout of the season its arguably their best opponent so far.
Grant Bruneel and Ryan Finley took turns each half in between the posts.
Finley was especially sensational turning back a Davis penalty kick early in the second half when the two teams were still scoreless.
"That sort of set the tone didn't it?" Bertram said. "Nobody likes to see a game decided or influenced too badly on a PK, but he's a good goalie, there's no doubt about it. He came to play today and that sort of started everything."
Moses Lake was able to seize the momentum and in the 48th minute Adrian Vasquez broke away from the Davis defense and snuck in the match's first goal after colliding with the Pirate keeper.
"We know if we can get Adrian or Johnny (Cortez) one-on-one they're going to make things happen, Adrian had a nice one, he finally broke loose and made them pay."
Vasquez was visibly in pain after the collision, but returned to the match just a few minutes later. Bertram said Vasquez has been dealing with some shin issues recently, but assured that he would be fine for Friday's match against Eastmont.
After returning to the match, Vasquez continued to make his imprint with an assist to Cortez in the 57th minute, which stretched Moses Lake's lead to 2-0.
Rehn Reiley put the game out of reach when his free kick ricocheted off a Davis defender and rolled past the goalie in the 62nd minute.
Davis allowed three goals in one half after only allowing two goals the entire season entering Tuesday's match against the Chiefs.
"You could see Davis was a little bit, what's the word, rattled amongst themselves 'cause they've never been in this spot this year," Bertram said. "When you get a team snipping at one another on there own teammates out on the field you've got them pretty much where you want them."
Moses Lake now sits atop the CBBN and will face Eastmont 7 p.m., Friday, at home.
"Our coaching staff is pretty much in belief that your team's a reflection of your coaches and we sort of like what's in the mirror right now," Bertram said.
