'Pippin' a crazy, colorful night out
Daily Inter-Lake | UPDATED 10 years, 9 months AGO
The magical, musical fable “Pippin” will be performed by high school students from around the Flathead Valley April 25-27 at 7 p.m. each night at the Whitefish Performing Arts Center.
This production is part of the Alpine Kids! Theatre Project educational outreach program.
“This show is unlike anything we’ve ever done in this program,” Alpine Theatre Project artistic director Betsi Morrison said. “The look of the show is a crazy mix of circus, Japanese anime, punk and ’60’s mod style. We’re also employing entirely new production techniques.”
The “production techniques” to which Morrison is referring includes the heavy use of a technique called projection mapping, whereby video and images are projected onto the scenery throughout the show. Alpine Theatre Project collaborated with Dustin Herbert’s media design class at Whitefish High School to create some of the images.
Currently enjoying a sold-out revival on Broadway, “Pippin” tells the tale of a young prince on a death-defying journey to find the meaning of his existence. Will he choose a happy but simple life? Or will he risk it all for a singular flash of glory? With a score composed by Tony Award winning composer/lyricist, Stephen Schwartz (“Wicked,” “Godspell”), and original direction and choreography by the legendary Bob Fosse, “Pippin” is a fantasy fable for all time.
The mission of Alpine Theatre Project’s educational outreach program is to foster con?dence and creativity in local students through participation in theatre. More than 900 students from every school in the valley have participated in the program since it began.
Tickets are $8 for students and $15 for adults. Call 862-7469 or visit atpwhitefish.org for tickets and information.
