In its 14th season, Northwest Sacred Music Chorale will present its spring concert, "Bach, Beethoven & Broadway," Saturday, April 26 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, April 27 at 3 p.m. at the Salvation Army Kroc Center, 1765 W. Golf Course Road, Coeur d'Alene.
Verne Windham of KPBX Radio is giving a lecture 45 minutes prior to each of the concerts. This preamble will provide insight into the composers, the music and historical context.
The first part of the program will feature the works of Bach and Beethoven including Beethoven's masterpiece "Mass in C Major" featuring soloists Lynette Ryan, soprano; Debbie Raby, alto; Cody Bray, tenor; and Bob Brannan, baritone. The program concludes with memorable songs from "South Pacific," "Titanic," "Les Miserables" and several spirituals.
Ryan performed the role of Christine in "The Phantom of the Opera" in Switzerland, the United States national tour and numerous other international venues. She was invited to Dublin, Ireland, to sing with the National Concert Hall Symphony Orchestra to perform the role of Christine and many others in "The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber." In New York City, she was a soloist honoring John Gielgud at the Lincoln Center. Ryan was nominated for a Kevin Kline Award in Theatre in St. Louis for her performances as Philia in "A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum."
Raby studied voice in Seattle with Edmund Hurshell. At 17, she was selected to sing "You'll Never Walk Alone" with internationally known conductor-arranger Carmen Dragon. Raby was recently a featured soloist with the Northwest Sacred Music Chorale for Antonio Vivaldi's "Gloria," Handel's "Messiah" and Haydn's "Lord Nelson Mass."
Bray recently graduated as a vocal performance major from Eastern Washington University and is currently pursuing a second degree in theater. He was recently Marius in "Les Miserable" in the joint Spokane Civic Theatre, Spokane Symphony production at the Fox Theatre. Bray has performed in several operas with Opera Coeur d'Alene and played the title role in "Bat Boy," Barrett in "Titanic" and Frederick in "Pirates of Penzance" at Lake City Playhouse. He was recently the tenor soloist for Northwest Sacred Musical Chorale's performances of "Messiah" and "Lord Nelson Mass."
Brannan has performed with Seattle Opera, Kansas City Lyric Opera, Spokane Opera and Opera Coeur d'Alene and has appeared in Lake City Playhouse and Coeur d'Alene Summer Theatre productions. He is an active recitalist and has recently translated and performed a program of 18 Rachmaninoff medium voice songs with Russian pianist Margarita Tsareva-Huber.
Gaynell Coppess, artistic director of The Ensemble, will conduct Beethoven's "Hallelujah" and Becki Stevens, assistant conductor of The Ensemble will preside over "Jesus Paid It All."
The rest of the program will be conducted by Kent Kimball, Northwest Sacred Music Chorale's new conductor. Kimball graduated from the University of Southern California and studied with three renowned American choral conductors: Charles Hirt, Roger Wagner and Robert Shaw. Kimball has conducted the Century Singers, Spokane String Quartet, Hamblen Baroque Chorus, The Westminster Chamber Orchestra and the Good News Singers. The Los Angeles Times said his conducting was, "Rhythmically precise, well-balanced performances...a model of beautiful choral blend and tone."
The nonprofit Northwest Sacred Music Chorale comprises more than 60 members from the Inland Northwest, and has been promoting quality choral music since 2001.
