Tablet primer a big hit

About 20 people were clearly engaged as they learned more about their tablets and eReaders Monday at Big Bend Community College.

The group took advantage of the technology training event through the Washington State Library's Gadget Menagerie program.

Training was offered on the following devices: Kindles, Nooks, Galaxy Tablets, iPads, and Microsoft Surface and a Chromebook.

Staff helped users with specific questions and were on hand to explain how the devices could be used to access library materials.

It was a win-win situation: residents were provided the free opportunity in a low-key environment and local libraries will benefit from better trained patrons and staff.

The state Library's goal is to hold 70 sessions in 40 locations by July.

Already, the sessions have been held in several locations in eastern and western Washington, including Sedro-Woolley, Lincoln County, Richland and Everett.

For Basin residents who missed the training in Moses Lake and Quincy, there are other opportunities outside our area. (Some dates are to be determined and can be further verified by emailing mail@sos.wa.gov or calling (360) 902-4151.)

The remaining dates and times are: April 22 (to be determined), Ellensburg Public Library, April 22-23, Walla Walla University Library, May 7, Fort Vancouver Regional Library-Stevenson, May 13, Fort Vancouver Regional Library-White Salmon, May 14, Fort Vancouver Regional Library-Goldendale, May 15, Fort Vancouver Regional Library-Bickleton, May 15, Asotin County Library-Clarkston, May 21, Columbia County Rural Library District-Dayton, May 22, Ocean Shores Public Library, May 29, June 17, Tacoma Community College Library, (to be determined), Washington Talking Book and Braille Library-Seattle, July 10.
