MISSOULA — The Glacier Wolfpack boys track and field team saw four of its competitors hit state qualifying marks as it edged Missoula Big Sky by nine points to win the Missoula Invitational on Saturday. Glacier totaled 102 points.

Evan Epperly clocked a time of 11.26 seconds to win the 100-meter dash, qualifying for the state meet, and finished second in the 200 (22.95).

Teammate Nathan Connell’s 1:57.44 mark in the 800 was good enough for second place, joining Epperly in qualifying efforts.

Lonnie Sherman’s personal best tied a meet record, broke a school record and qualified him for the state meet as he won the pole vault, clearing 14 feet, six inches.

Zach Dennehy hit a state-qualifying mark in the discuss with a toss of 153-2. He finished third.

“The coaches are happy with what the kids are doing in practice and it’s showing in the meets when they’re competing,” Glacier head coach Arron Deck said.

“One thing we really like about our team is they always show up and compete. They’re not too concerned with team score, but after today they were excited saying ‘you know coach this is the first time we won here in Missoula.’ It’s another notch for our program. Good things are happening.”

Whitefish placed sixth (54 1/2) points. Its effort was highlighted by a first-place finish in the 400-meter relay. Sean Foley, Keaton Grove, Jed Nagler and Luke Cardon clocked a time of 44.71 seconds, edging Glacier by a hundredth of a second.

Luke May took home the javelin title (187-1) for the Bulldogs. He was named the Class A field event athlete of the meet.

Flathead placed eighth (48 1/2). High jumper Matt Quist improved his personal best by an inch with a 6-7 jump to win the event.

The Glacier (80 3/4)and Flathead (65 1/4) girls teams finished third and fourth place, respectively.

Keyawna Larson threw the javelin six inches further than Missoula Hellgate’s Darby Henthorn for a 125-foot mark and a first-place finish.

Shauna Williams showed her versatility, placing third in both the 100 and the discus for the Wolfpack.

She was joined by teammate Bailey Smith, who placed third in the 800 with a time of 2:24.43.

Flathead had three first-place finishes from two athletes.

Rhiannon Sturgess swept the hurdle events, winning the 100 in 16.07 and the 300 with a time of 46.41.
