MOSES LAKE - Allison Hyer is the Moses Lake Distinguished Young Woman for 2014. She won the title at the program held April 19.
Quincy Wilks was the first finalist, and Elisabeth Knopp was the second finalist. The three, all high school juniors, will represent Moses Lake at events around the state, and Hyer will compete in the state Distinguished Young Women pageant in August.
"I was pretty surprised," Hyer said of her selection. When her name was announced "I was really, really excited, and happy, all these emotions at once." She was pleased that the hard work paid off, she said.
Hyer also won the Talent award, performing a clogging dance routine. She said she's been attending the program most of her life with her mom Debbie, and always wanted to participate when she got the opportunity. "I just knew I would do it." She was glad she did. "It was so much fun."
It will be a busy summer, but that's OK. "I'm really excited. I can't wait for this year."
Wilks received the Community Outreach award, for her promotion of the pageant, and the Interview award for her performance during the pre-program interview with the judges. She also received the "Self-Expression" award.
Knopp received the Scholastic award, based on her school records.
Isabelle Cleverly received the "Spirit of DYW" award, and April Suarez won the Fitness award, given for performance in the group fitness routine.
The Distinguished Young Woman program formerly was known as the Junior Miss pageant, and has been going on in Moses Lake since 1988. "All-American Girl" was the 2014 theme. "Our program would not have been a success without our many volunteer helpers," co-chair Bonnie Dorris said. She thanked the program volunteers and supporters.
