Young athletes weather Glacier Triangular
The Daily Inter Lake | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 10 years, 9 months AGO
The athletes at the Glacier Triangular track meet got through most of the day on Tuesday before the skies opened up and made things miserable. That was plenty of time to see some encouraging results at an early season, mid-week track meet.
“I think everyone got something out of it,” Glacier girls coach Jerry Boschee said. “It was great four our young kids.”
One of those young kids, Wolfpack freshman Bailey Smith, locked up a spot at the state meet in May after posting a qualifying time in the 1,600-meter run. Smith, one of the top distance runners for Glacier, led the field by a comfortable margin to win in five minutes, 25.78 seconds, more than 28 seconds ahead of second place.
“She’d been hovering around the 5:32 mark,” Boschee said. The qualifying mark for Class AA is 5:28. “Today, she ran a 5:25 without anybody pushing her. It’s kind of nice to see her get out of her comfort zone.”
Glacier’s Shauna Williams was the only athlete to win multiple individual events at the meet. She won the 100 in 13.37 seconds and the discus with a toss of 116 feet, 6 inches. The Wolfpack’s Tessa Krueger also maintained her strong start to the season with a winning toss of 38-1 1/2 in the shot put.
“Shauna and Tessa keep getting better every week,” Boschee said.
Bigfork’s girls won three events and a relay while Eureka’s Alex Bartmess won the 3,200 for the Lions.
There were no state qualifying marks on the boys side on a light day for the top contenders from each school. Glacier won eight events and the long relay at the host meet while Bigfork collected three event wins and the short relay.
Eureka excelled at the sprints, Christian Langston winning the 100 and Brandon Conard the 110 hurdles. Cole Jankovsky won the pole vault and Noln Hofstee the discus.
Glacier splits its teams this weekend as the girls head to the high-competition Great Falls Invitational and the boys the equally tough Swede Dahlberg in Butte. Eureka will be at the Libby Invite and Bigfork at Seeley Lake.
