Polson knocks off Libby; Ronan upends C-Falls

POLSON — Polson fought back from an early 2-0 deficit to hand Libby its first loss of the season in a Northwestern A conference softball game on Thursday.

Libby started the game fast, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning. Polson loaded the bases in the bottom of the frame, but scored just one run.

The Pirates didn’t take a share of the lead until the third inning and didn’t break it open until the fifth, when tied 2-2, Polson scored five runs to take a commanding 7-2 lead. The Pirates scored one more in the sixth.

Polson pitcher Jessica Bagnell settled in after the first inning, shutting out the Loggers for the rest of the game. She finished with eight strikeouts while allowing just two hits. Bagnell was also 4-for-4 from the plate with a triple.

Libby pitcher Hannah England had seven strikeouts.

Auria Benefield was 1 for 3 with both RBIs for the Loggers.

Columbia Falls 7

RONAN — Ronan took a 4-0 lead with a big second inning, then held on to beat Columbia Falls in a nonconference matchup.

Columbia Falls scored four times in the top of the seventh, but that was as close as the Wildkats would get.

Ronan outhit Columbia Falls 15-9. Winning pitcher Alaina Madsen and catcher Kaitlyn Sassaman both went 3-for-4. Madsen homered.

Winter Kemppainen went 2-for-4 for Columbia Falls.

Columbia Falls will compete in the Frenchtown Tournament today and Saturday.
