Sheriff to offer home security check

A new program created by the Kootenai County Sheriff's Office will enable county residents to have their homes inspected for any potential security breaches.
Community Service Officer Gary Shults told The Press Thursday he created the program, called "Home Safety Security Check," as a branch of the Neighborhood Watch Program after members of the community expressed interest.
"We've already had three people respond to the program and have us inspect their homes," Shults said. "They seem to really like it."
Shults added that residents in areas serviced by the sheriff's office will be eligible for the free service. Those who choose to participate will have a member of the sheriff's office conduct a check of their home.
"We will check your exterior, garage, sliding doors, along with your windows, for security," Shults said in a press release. "Other areas we will examine are your outside security, outdoor/indoor valuable and personal property, security when away from home, and general security for your home and neighborhood."
Once the check is completed, Shults said homeowners will be given a copy of a report on the security of the home along with recommendations to increase home security. Shults added that he will also keep a copy of the report on file to look at, should participating residents have any additional questions.
"The program is beneficial to everybody," Shults said. "It'll build a better relationship between the sheriff's office and the community."
To schedule a security check, contact Shults at (208)446-2121.
"There is no 100 percent security," Shults said. "But everything you do to prevent a burglary helps."
