Gomer, Cherry hit go-ahead doubles in split

POST FALLS - Nate Gomer hit a go-ahead two run double in the first game for Post Falls and Reilly Cherry had a two-run double to spark Lake City in the second as the teams split a 5A Inland Empire League doubleheader on Friday at Post Falls High.

Post Falls won the first game 4-3, with Lake City taking the second game 9-1.

"Both teams played pretty well in the first game," Post Falls coach Dustin Frank said. "In the second game, we hit the ball we and played well defensively, but we lost focus at critical times and didn't execute when we needed to. (Ryan) Hunt threw well in the first game and (J.J.) Winger threw really well in the second game for Lake City."

Post Falls (10-9, 2-7 5A IEL) is at Coeur d'Alene on Tuesday.

Lake City (10-9, 4-5) hosts Lewiston in a 5A IEL doubleheader on Tuesday at 2 p.m.

COEUR d'ALENE - The Timberwolves wasted little time in its 5A Inland Empire League win over the Trojans, as they scored seven runs in the bottom of the first inning in a rout in the first game of a doubleheader.

The games also served as the annual Save 2nd Base games at Lake City High.

Vanessa Shippy and Dakota Wilson each had three hits for the Timberwolves (13-4, 6-3 5A IEL). Wilson hit two home runs and Hailey Jackson tacked on another homer.

For Post Falls (0-14, 0-9), Katie McDermott had the team's only run batted in and Brook Gomer went 1 for 2 with a run scored.

In the second game, Shippy went 3 for 3 with two home runs, six runs batted in and two runs scored.

Lake City hosts Richland today.

Post Falls plays Tuesday at Coeur d'Alene.

Bayley shoots one-over,

wins medalist honors

LIBERTY LAKE - Lakeland's Derek Bayley shot a one-over 71 to earn boys medalist honors at the 14-team East Valley Invitational at Liberty Lake Golf Course.

"We've played some pretty good competition," Hawks coach Mario Maddy said. "Our top golfer has won five out of eight tournaments he's been in. It was a good team showing. We've been competitive in every match we've played in."

Jake Vetsch shot a 75 for Lake City, which finished fourth.

Clarkston won the boys title with a 317.

Lakeland will host an invitational on Monday in the with the boys at Twin Lakes Village in Rathdrum, and the girls at The Links in Post Falls.

SPOKANE - The Coeur d'Alene girls finished second in the Big East Invitational at at Wandermere Golf Course, finishing with a 242.

Sierra Bezdicek earned medalist honors for Mt. Spokane, which claimed the team title.

Emily Dodge shot an 87 for Lake City. Aidan Young shot 103, Shelby Severson 99 and Kennedy Shioya 107 for Lake City.

Individual scorers for Coeur d'Alene were not available.

Both Coeur d'Alene and Lake City return to action at the Lakeland Invitational on Monday at The Links Golf Course.

SANDPOINT - Post Falls No. 1 boys singles player Lincoln Hill beat Micah Buckmiller in the top match of the day for the Trojans, in the team's close loss to the Bulldogs.

Hill won the second set in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (7-5). It was the first time Hill defeated Buckmiller in his high school career.

"Lincoln did a good job of keeping his composure back," Post Falls coach Kirk Hartzell said. "He stayed solid the entire time and found a way to stay on serve and finish it off."

Hartzell said he was proud of his team's effort.

"That's the first time we've ever taken more than three matches off of them," Hartzell said. "Our kids played in long matches, most of them were pretty competitive."

Post Falls plays Monday at home against Rogers.

COEUR d'ALENE - Lucas Ross scored the game-winner in overtime, leading Lake City past host Coeur d'Alene in a North Idaho Lacrosse League match.

Lake City trailed 7-1 midway through the second, but rallied to force overtime by scoring eight of the final nine goals.

Lake City (3-0, 3-0 NILL) host Hellsgate High of Missoula today at 3 p.m.

Coeur d'Alene (5-4, 2-1) travels to Moscow on Thursday.
