YAKIMA - The Moses Lake boys and girls tennis team breathed a sigh of relief this week, after securing their first win of the season against Eisenhower High School.

The boys team, 1-3 in league play, 1-6 in dual matches, was dominating, winning every singles and doubles match.

"The boys really played well. We got some favorable match ups and took advantage of the breaks that we got," head coach Richard Gregoire said.

The only hiccup for the boys was an opening set tiebreak loss for #1 singles player Bryan Earl. Earl went on to beat Eisenhower's Martin Martine 6-7(4-7), 6-4, 6-2.

Other boys scores:

  • #2 Jace Hunt MLHS d. Skylar Anders EHS 6-4, 6-2
  • #3 Pedro Barreras MLHS d. Chandler Martinez EHS 6-0, 6-1
  • #4 Tyler Ward MLHS d. Eric Soto EHS 6-2, 6-2
  • #1 doubles Nolan Knapp/Chad Palmer MLHS d. Sohei Sato/Quin Wilson EHS 6-3, 6-0
  • #2 doubles Billy Francis/Vaughn Koreis MLHS d. Julian Contreras/Jonathan Aguilar 6-2, 6-0
  • #3 doubles James Zimmer/Ming Bowser MLHS d. Johnny Barlett/Robert Salas EHS 6-2, 6-0

For the girls, the duo of Carina LeFave and Kylee McKay remained undefeated on the year, beating Eisenhower's #1 doubles team of Elizabeth Glenski and Hannah Taylor 6-2, 6-2.

Gregoire said he was not sure if the pair would play well together when the season began, but after knocking off six consecutive #1 doubles team, he said he is sticking with the pairing.

"They are always just so positive. Carina's natural tendency is to play offense and Kylee's natural tendency is to play defense, so it really is a perfect fit," he said.

The win proved critical for the girls team as they edged the Cadets 4-3. The Chiefs are 1-3 in league play and 1-6 in dual matches.
