Flathead, Glacier on the track for crosstown dual

Look for records to be challenge, athletes to turn in top performances and a close battle on the team front today for the seventh annual crosstown track meet at Legends Stadium.
The action pitting Flathead versus Glacier will begin at 3 p.m.
Flathead’s girls won last year, 85-60, giving the Bravettes a 5-1 edge in the series.
Glacier’s boys came out on top last year, 94-51, but the Braves still lead the series 4-2.
The boys set seven meet records last year while the girls broke three.
“We’re at home, that’s the special thing,” Flathead boys coach Dan Hodge said.
“The kids are friends, but when they get on the track they want the bragging rights not so much for the team, but to say I’m the best in the 1,600, the high jump or the long jump.”
The crosstown was held at Legends Stadium the first there years. It has alternated back and forth between Glacier and Legends since then.
Hodge said with three meets on Flathead’s schedule this week, and having just competed at the Harry Swede Dahlberg Invitational on Saturday in Butte, “we’re doing a little specialization” for the crosstown.
“We don’t want to wear the kids out by having them run all their events,” he said.
Hodge says Glacier will have the “upper hand” in this dual as “they have the sprinters and that accounts for a lot of points.”
Flathead’s strongest event on the track is the hurdles. Four Braves placed in the 110s in Butte.
For the girls, Glacier coach Jerry Boschee expects a close meet.
“It should be fun,” he said.
“It could come down to the very end, the last two events (3,200 and 1,600 relay).
Like Hodge, Boschee will scale back the work load for most his athletes.
“I’m running my girls in two, three events, not loading them up,” he said.
Flathead heads to Missoula for a triangular with Hellgate and Sentinel on Thursday. Flathead and Glacier finish the week on Saturday at the ARM Invitational in Whitefish.
