Royal athletes excel at track and field events

ROYAL CITY - The track season is under way for Royal High School, and several Knight boys and girls are excelling in the early going.

Joe Lang is proving to be a triple - possibly quadruple - threat. Among class A performers he has the top triple jump in the state at 43-7.25. He has the fifth best long jump in the state at 20-2.50 and the fifth best 110 hurdles time at 16.08. He ran the 300 hurdles in 43.68 last week to become a contender in that event.

Another boy who is making a mark for himself is Michael Valentine. He ranks third in the state in the high jump at 6-0.

The girls 4x200 relay is ranked second in District 5, winning last week at River View in a time of 1:58.34. That group includes Gracelynn Miller, Berenise Rodriguez, Maggie Delay and Cynthia Cid.

Caitlin Diaz, the freshman who was a whiz in cross country last fall, ranks second in the district 3200 with a best time of 13:38.82.

In the meet at River View against the Panthers and Kiona-Benton, individual winners for the Knights were:

Victor Garcia, 1600; Salvador Horta, 3200; Joe Lang, 110 hurdles, LJ, TJ; Brian Edeza, Jacob Lee, Victor Garcia, Daniel Mendoza, 1600 relay; Gracelynn Miller, 400; Caitlin Diaz, 3200; Gracelynn Miller, Berenise Rodriguez, Maggie Delay and Cynthia Cid, 800 relay and Dori Floren, discus.

Taking second place for the Knights were: Jacob Lee, 400; Victor Garcia, 800, 1600; Brian Edeza, Jacob Lee, Steven Toro and Daniel Mendoza, 400 relay; Michael Valentine, high jump; Gracelynn Miller, 200; Cynthia Cid, 400; Caitlin Diaz, 1600; Cynthia Cid, Becca Lee, Elsie Delgado and Gracelynn Miller, 1600 relay and Dori Floren, shot.

Finishing third for the Knights were: Daniel Mendoza, 400; Jacob Lee, 800; Hunter Follett, shot; Gerard Weyns, discus; Nathan Perdue, javelin; Michael Valentine, TJ; Mariana Jimenez, 400; Cynthia Cid, 800; Elsie Delgado, 1600; Berenise Rodriguez 300 hurdles; Dori Floren, Hannah Fanning, Savannah Casper and Augustina Gutierrez, 400 relay; Dori Floren, javelin; Savannah Casper, HJ; Maggie Delay, LJ and Araceli Barragan, TJ.
