The youth get a glimpse of how the newspaper works. They gathered outside the Herald office with papers they rolled themselves after the tour.

MOSES LAKE - A home school co-op group toured the Columbia Basin Herald newsroom and offices Friday, led by publisher Harlan Beagley.

Lisa Porter, of Moses Lake, said the group takes a field trip to local businesses at the end of their spring session. Her son, Even Porter, 14, is also a carrier for the Herald.

She said Beagley was engaging, patient and knowledgeable. And surprising, when he told the kids the difference between notebook paper and newspaper is potatoes. Newspapers are made with starch, a derivative of potatoes, and most of those potatoes are grown here in Grant County.

"It's always rewarding to spend time with our next generations of readers. My colleges of the newspaper enjoy giving tours to the youth groups." Beagley said. Call Joyce Mclanahan at 509-765-4561, ex. 138 to schedule a youth group tour or email her at jmclanahan@columbiabasinherald.com.
