MOSES LAKE - A convicted felon allegedly ran from police during a traffic stop early Sunday morning and attempted to get rid of a gun by throwing it over the fence to the Moses Lake water park.
About 1:20 a.m., Moses Lake police stopped a vehicle in the area of West Fourth Avenue and South Dogwood Street. The officer reportedly recognized one of the occupants, Angel M. Ramirez, 20, of Warden, and knew he had an outstanding warrant. During the stop, Ramirez allegedly fled from the vehicle and immediately reached into his pockets and pulled out a gun. The pursuing officer reportedly told Ramirez to drop the gun. That's when Ramirez threw it over the fence into the Surf n' Slide Water Park before he was caught shortly after, according to police reports.
Ramirez was booked into Grant County Jail on suspicion of felon in possession of a firearm and a warrant for driver younger than age 21 consuming alcohol.
Ramirez was sentenced to 72 days in jail for riot while armed stemming from a gang-related kidnapping in September 2012. He also has prior convictions of possession of methamphetamine and second-degree unlawful possession of a firearm, according to previous reports from the Columbia Basin Herald.
Two other occupants in the vehicle, Gilberto R. Lopez, 28, and Eliazar J. Ramos, 35, were arrested on Department of Corrections warrants for escape community custody.
