MISSOULA — A pair of local athletes thrilled the crowd at the prestigious Russ Pilcher Western Montana Top 10 track meet on Tuesday at Missoula County Stadium, blowing away a long-standing record at the meet in a tight finish.

Bigfork’s Makena Morley added another accolade on her growing resume at the meet, winning the 800-meter dash in a record time of 2 minutes, 12.99 seconds — topping the old mark of 2:16.11 set by former Valkyrie Brooke Andrus in 2006.

Morley edged Corvallis’ Sadie Henderson and Whitefish’s Marlow Schulz by hundredths of a second to nab the victory. All three athletes passed the old record mark.

Schulz won the 100 in 12.63 seconds, setting state qualifying times in both events.

Columbia Falls’ Carla Nicosia won the triple jump with a mark of 36 feet, 8 inches. That mark, also a state qualifier, was three inches better than the field.

Wildkats teammate Samantha Mundel finished fourth in the 1,600 and sixth in the 3,200, setting state marks in each.

Whitefish’s Phoebe Guercio finished fifth in the 300 hurdles to set a qualifying mark and the Bulldog girls’ 400 and 1,600 relay teams each placed third and guaranteed a spot at state. The Polson girls 1,600 relay team finished fifth with a state qualifying time.

Columbia Falls’ Nakia Alexander leapt 43-6 in the triple jump to notch a victory while teammate Tyler Morsan finished fifth in the javelin to set a qualifying mark. Polson’s Jacob Clairmont finished second in the long jump to meet his mark.

Bigfork’s Logan Morley won a highly-contested 1,600 in 4:31.63.

Whitefish sophomore Luke May won the boys javelin with a throw of 190-1, leading a charge of Bulldogs with qualifying times at the meet. Sean Foley was second in the pole vault with a season best 13-6 and fourth in the long jump.

EJ Havens was fifth in the pole vault and Koler Kanistanaux was sixth in the discus. The Bulldogs’ 400 relay team also made the mark, finishing fourth.

But it was old Whitefish times that were under fire on Tuesday, with a handful of meet records going down. Butte’s Dalton Daum tied a mark set in the 100 by Cody Henning in 2004 to win the meet and Helena Capital’s Kyle Nickol passed Anto Daoud’s 2010 record to win the 400. Helena High beat Whitefish’s 2004 team record in the 1,600 relay to win as well.
