ST. REGIS – The St. Regis girls track team placed high enough to beat out tough competing schools like Ronan and Alberton during the April 26 Seeley-Swan Invitational. 

Both girls and boys teams traveled all the way to Missoula’s County Stadium to compete. 

The conditions were very poor as it was muddy and windy, and the temperature was only around 40 degrees at meet time.

However, the boys’ team didn’t place high enough to be considered in the final standings.

Trevor Lowry competed in the high jump but didn’t qualify. 

“He definitely has a good chance to get through to districts,” said Maury Johnston, St. Regis Track coach.

Gibson Lowry competed in shot put and threw for 31 feet. His season average is around 33 feet. 

The girls finished in 12th place with 12 points, among the highest of the lower scoring teams. Plains took first with 135, and Bigfork at second with 45. 

The final team standings for the day were: Plains 135, Bigfork 45, Arlee 44, Thompson Falls 37, Darby 35, Drummond 33, Townsend 30, Seeley-Swan 24, Loyola Sacred Heart 22, Fairfield 16, Choteau 15, St. Regis 12, Ronan 11.5, Lincoln 8, Alberton 6, Cut Bank 2.5, Fort Benton 2, Victor 1 and Conrad with 1.

In javelin, Arianna Jones took third for St. Regis with a 120-7 1/2. Jasmine Jones also competed, earning a throw of 69 feet. Johnston said she is normally around a 70, so she still hit her mark for this week’s competition.   

“The nice thing about Arianna is that she is consistently around 120 which will definitely get her to state,” Johnston said. “She came in second last year at state.” 

The final javelin stats for Mineral County schools were: Arianna Jones, StR, 120-7 1/2; 4, Ryan Vicek, Alb, 107-8 1/2; 5.

Gabby Moeller finished third in high jump at 5-0, just below Thompson Falls athletes Autrey Hannum and Shey Hannum.

“Gabby with about 35 jumpers or so,” Johnston said. “She cleared five feet as the conditions weren’t great, so she’s usually better.”

There is only seven weeks left in the St. Regis Track season.

“We’re not going to have a meet next week,” Johnston said. “The next one will be on May 10 in Missoula which will be our last regular meet before districts at Polson on May 15.” 

After the Polson meet, the Tigers will have their work cut out for them for the rest of the month. 

On May 23-24, Big Sky in Missoula will host the divisional matches. 

The week after on May 30-31, St. Regis heads to the state competition at Great Falls.
