Call it an off-the-field victory, chock-full of emotion.
Local sixth-grade arena football teams on Sunday helped celebrate the life of an opponent who died in the Oso, Wash., mudslide on March 22.
During games between teams from Coeur d'Alene, Lakeland, Spokane and the Seattle area, the teams, members of the Eastern Washington University football program and others presented monetary and merchandise donations for the family of JoJo Mangual, who died during the tragedy.
"It was a special day - what youth sports should be about - competing hard on the field, but supporting each other before and after the game," said Dan Pearse, coach of the North Idaho Outlaws.
"No one who was at the event will ever forget the impact that it had."
JoJo played for one of the Seattle-area arena football teams and had friends on the other teams which played on Sunday at the Spokane Shock practice facility in Spokane Valley.
Between the last two games of the day, there was a memorial for JoJo.
"All teams present gathered with parents, friends and families to share a prayer and some encouraging words," Pearse said.
Two of JoJo's siblings and his stepfather died in the mudslide. His mother and one younger sibling survived.
A friend of JoJo's family accepted the donations. Pearse said an official count wasn't taken on the money donations, but he said it was "several hundred dollars." Merchandise included an autographed EWU football helmet, toys and Silverwood Theme Park passes.
"Through generous donations from local businesses, we were able to give gift bags to each Seattle player with items to help them remember this fun and healing weekend," Pearse said.
