Tooth care 'to-do' list
Dr. Logan Hazard/Heartwood Family Dental | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 11 years, 7 months AGO
What is on your to-do list for today, this month, this year? No matter your age, there should be some 'to-do's' in the back of your mind to keep your teeth healthy for many years to come. On a weekly basis, I see people who have waited too long to add their pearly whites to their mental to-do list. It is my personal goal to never have a patient approach me and say, "Dr. Hazard, you never told me..." Here is a quick go-to list for every stage of life.
Toddler through pre-school: Hello teeth! First teeth begin appearing around the first birthday and continue to appear all the way to young adulthood (wisdom teeth). Tooth brushing habits should begin as soon as the first tooth breaks through. Most commonly adults lose their teeth due to a combination of poor oral hygiene and dietary habits. Give your kids a head start by creating healthy habits from a young age.
The health of your mouth is directly connected to the health of your body. If a child under the age of four loses a tooth it may be a sign of other health complications, such as diabetes or autoimmune disorders. Please do not ignore this warning sign.
Elementary School: Time to say goodbye to your baby teeth and hello to your new adult chompers. Please allow these teeth to come out naturally, as contrived methods may leave root tips in the gums or lead to dental problems. The new teeth are the real deal, and they need to be lovingly cared for. Brushing twice a day and flossing once a day are more important than ever. Sugar and soda habits will affect your teeth over the long haul and can lead to tooth loss. These treats are okay occasionally, but rinsing with water afterwards will lessen their harmful effect on teeth. Teeth should be monitored for decay or other problems at regular dental cleanings and check-ups.
Teenagers: The most common tooth loss seen in teenagers is from accidents or contact sports. If your child is active in contact sports, it is essential for them to use a mouthguard to protect their permanent teeth. An effective guard can be purchased at a local drug store.
All ages: Sometimes people don't go to the dentist regularly, or refuse to go even if a tooth hurts, because they are afraid of pain or they do not feel they have money to pay for treatment. Unfortunately, putting off dental work can only make the problem worse, and ultimately will probably wind up being more expensive.
As you age, tooth loss becomes more of a concern. If you start losing teeth without an apparent reason, it could be early signs of a more serious condition. Premature tooth loss could be a signal for problems such as diabetes, dementia or other systemic infections.
Diet plays an important role in dental health. Always be sure to get enough calcium (especially for teenagers who are accumulating bone mass), protein and other nutrients. It is never too late to change your habits and get a fresh start.

Creative uses for dental floss
What do duct tape and dental floss have in common? Both of these items have a variety of uses in a pinch! Do you have dental floss at home? Here are some extra incentives to keep this handy item around.
Healthy teeth into your golden years
When I purchased Heartwood Dental, the average age of my patients was over 65 years old. Since then, we have become a lot more diverse in our patient pool, but I have seen and treated a lot of the most experienced members of our community. I have noticed that many people don't know what to expect with their dental health as they grow older. While it is obvious that each person ages differently, there are a few trends that dentists see that can offer insight and suggestions for people who are interested in chewing, biting, and smiling well into their golden years.
Foods that keep mouths happy
Every now and then, I have patients come into my office who haven't received any dental care for a long period of time - sometimes even decades. It is always fascinating to me the amount of variety that I see in these exams. Many times, of course, the patient has several cavities, and may even need more extensive dental work like extractions, root canals, or crowns. This is what we would expect from years of neglect, and it usually comes as no surprise to us or the patient. In these cases, we simply do our best to start where we are and fix what we can.
