SOAP LAKE - Art based on the Northwest was on display Saturday night in Soap Lake as an Arizona artist debuted watercolor paintings at the Fire on Main gallery.

A public reception was held Saturday night at the art gallery in Soap Lake, featuring watercolor works from William Dubin, of Tucson, a longtime painter and sculpture whose work has been shown throughout the U.S., Canada and Europe.

Bill Elston, whose work was previously on display at the local art gallery and has known Dubin for nearly 50 years, said Dubin takes his obsession to detail to more than just paint on paper, using imported, hand-made paper to compliment the vibrant colors displayed in his work. Much of the paintings on display show scenes from the Seattle area.

Dubin, who joined the gallery opening via Facetime video, said he has focused on displaying watercolor paintings for the past 10 years, although he started using watercolors in high school. Dubin also has experience in sculpture, an aspect of art he is no longer able to perform because of age, Elston said.

Debra Noah, the owner of the Soap Lake gallery, said Elston chose to display watercolors inspired by scenes from the Seattle area. Overall, his art has captured landscapes from across the country. Dubin holds a master of fine arts degree from California College of Arts and Crafts
