Teacher awarded

Kami Heinz, a math teacher at Glacier Gateway Elementary School, in Columbia Falls, was one of seven Montana public school teachers selected as 2014 state finalists for the prestigious Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. This is the nation’s highest honor for U.S. mathematics and science teachers in grades K-12. The 2014 Montana finalists will be honored at an awards dinner this fall.

Class of 1956

The Flathead County High School Class of 1956 will hold their annual dinner and get-together at the Elks Club in Kalispell on Thursday, Sept. 4, starting with an open bar at 5 p.m. and smorgasbord dinner at 6 p.m. Entree and cost are yet to be determined. The class has held the annual get-together for the past seven years, and last year’s event was attended by 160 class members and guests. RSVP at 752-2959 by Aug. 25. Graduate

Donald Brown, of Columbia Falls, recently received his bacherlor’s in interdisciplinary studies from Western Governors University during its 27th semi-annual commencement ceremony in Salt Lake City on July 12. The university awarded 3,085 undergraduate and 2,456 graduate degrees. Founded in 1997 by 19 U.S. governors, WGU has grown to become a national university with more than 46,000 students and 33,000 graduates in all 50 states.

National Guard

David Willis, of Columbia Falls, recently joined the Montana Army National Guard to serve as a logistical specialist. He is a 2014 graduate of Stillwater Christian High School and will attend Army Basic Training at Fort Sill, Okla. Upon completion, he will attend logistics school at Fort Lee, Va. and be assigned to the 1063rd Support Maintenance Company, in Billings.

A bill requiring the state to electronically verify that all foreign nationals are in the U.S. legally before issuing a Montana driver’s license or ID card was signed into law by Gov. Brian Schweitzer on April 18.

Uphill skiers need to be aware of avalanches on Big Mtn.

Whitefish Mountain Resort’s post-season uphill policy expired last week, but with significant snowfall and changing weather conditions, the resort reminds skier and hikers that avalanche hazards in the ski area’s permitted boundaries do exist.
