COEUR d'ALENE - An internal investigation into the July 9 officer-involved shooting of a dog is close to completion, authorities said Tuesday.

Arfee, a 2-year-old black Labrador, was shot by a Coeur d'Alene Police Department officer in the parking lot of Java on Sherman. At the time of the incident, the dog was inside its owner's van. The window was rolled partially down.

Sgt. Christie Wood said the department hopes to have the internal investigation completed very soon. The next step in the process, according to Wood, is a shooting review board.

"The shooting review board is normally made up of law enforcement officials from surrounding agencies and supervisors from within our department," Wood said. "Their role is to look at the facts presented from the investigation and make a determination of the use of force."

After the investigation is reviewed by the board, Wood said the next step is a third-party review by a person who is not associated with the department. That person has not yet been selected and the city attorney's office will be in charge of the decision.

"We hope to have all of these steps completed in the next few weeks," Wood said. "Mayor Widmyer has stated that once the process is completed, the information will be released to the public with the exception of any documents related to personnel."
