MATTAWA - The month of August has been designated nation wide as the month to raise awareness about the importance of breastfeeding babies. 

A brochure developed by the California Dept. of Health, WIC Supplemental Nutrition Branch states: "Breastmilk has more of the good things babies need."  CBHA WIC Breastfeeding Counselor, Telly Cantu, agrees. 

"Breastmilk contains antibodies, hormones, anti-viruses, anti-allergies, anti-parasites, growth factors, enzymes, minerals, vitamins, fat, DHA/ARA, carbohydrates, protein, and water," she said.  "In comparison formula contains minerals, vitamins, fat, DHA/ARA, carbohydrates, protein and water."

Research shows that, when compared to mother's breastmilk, formula is missing many things babies need to be strong, healthy and smart. 

"Formula-fed babies have a greater risk of: ear infections, diarrhea, constipation, pneumonia, and SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome."  Cantu said. 

She added that formula-fed babies have a greater risk of: obesity (becoming overweight), diabetes, asthma and allergies, and even cancer. Expectant mothers are urged to talk to their medical providers about breastfeeding their babies.

"As a breastfeeding counselor, I am available to anyone who needs help. I also do home visits and can answer any questions you may have," Cantu said.

 "Breastfeeding helps you enjoy a special relationship with your baby," she added. "We want to do everything we can to help you succeed."
