Willows in Texas

Former Hungry Horse resident and football athlete Abe Willows is doing well playing for Lake Travis High School in Texas. Last season as a sophomore, Willows had 15 touchdowns and 1,000 multi-purpose yards, helping lead his team to the state Class 5A quarterfinals. Willows returns each summer to work at his father’s tourist business, Willows Huckland, in Hungry Horse.

College run

Flathead Valley Community College will host a Red, White and Blue Run to honor National Day of Service and Remembrance. The non-timed 3K fun run or walk will take place on the college campus in Kalispell on Friday, Sept. 5, at 4 p.m. and will be open to FVCC students and community, including employees, alumni, ambassadors, trustees, donors and families. Hole in one

Kim Pyett, of Calgary, hit a hole-in-one at the Meadow Lake Resort golf course. He used a 7-iron on the 162-yard second hole.

Wave Ryders

The Wave Ryders Swim Club at The Wave athletic facility in Whitefish is accepting registrations for the fall and winter short-course season. Practice will begin Sept. 2. For more information, contact The Wave at 862-2444.

Ultramarathon

The 33rd Le Grizz 50 Mile Ultramarathon will take place along Hungry Horse Reservoir on Saturday, Oct. 11. Sponsored by the Cheetah Herders Athletic Club, the foot race helps get first-time ultradistance runners to the finish line. The historical completion rate averages 95 percent. A bill requiring the state to electronically verify that all foreign nationals are in the U.S. legally before issuing a Montana driver’s license or ID card was signed into law by Gov. Brian Schweitzer on April 18.

Uphill skiers need to be aware of avalanches on Big Mtn.

Whitefish Mountain Resort’s post-season uphill policy expired last week, but with significant snowfall and changing weather conditions, the resort reminds skier and hikers that avalanche hazards in the ski area’s permitted boundaries do exist.
