MATTAWA - Mike Thiede, winemaker, and Lois Thiede, co-owner at Ginkgo Forest Winery, have added a new award to their growing list of medals and recognitions.

The Ginkgo Forest 2010 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon was declared the Best of Varietal and earned Double Gold at the 2014 Tri-Cities Wine Festival held on Nov. 15.

Ginkgo's 2010 Tumbleweed Cabernet won a Gold, while five other wines earned Silver medals.

"Getting best of varietal is recognition for the Wahluke Slope as well as our winery," Mike Thiede said. "Move over Red Mountain."

There were 358 wines from 71 wineries at the Festival. The Double Gold was one of 21 wines so designated, meaning all six judges agreed the wine should receive the highest mark.

The judges awarded 93 gold medals, 179 silver medals and 43 bronze medals.

Among other local wineries:

Best of Class and a Double Gold went to Milbrandt Vineyards' 2011 Mosaic Red Wine.

Best of Class and Gold was awarded to Milbrandt's 2013 Traditions Pinot Gris and 2011 The Estates Merlot.

Best of Varietal and Double Gold went to the Jones of Washington 2013 Chardonnay.
