COEUR d'ALENE - A film documentary titled "Add the Words" will be showing in Coeur d'Alene Dec. 5 and 6.

The documentary covers the story of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community's struggle to get "sexual orientation" and "gender identity" added to Idaho's Human Rights Act. The film follows the leaders of the Add the Words movement.

It will screen at 7 p.m. on Friday at Unity Church, and at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Coeur d'Alene Library. Admission is free.

Cammie Pavesic and Michael Gough are co-directors and producers.

It remains legal in Idaho to fire someone from a job if they are gay or transgender, or to refuse them housing or services - unless the person lives in one of nine cities with a protection ordinance, said Pavesic, who is a Coeur d'Alene resident.

"Coeur d'Alene has protection, we need to make sure they keep it," she said.

She said the Kootenai County Task Force on Human Relations and PFLAG raised enough money that admission to the two showings is free.

The LGBT community as well as straight allies, businesses and progressive organizations have worked for eight years to have the words added.

During the 2014 Idaho legislative session, supporters began to use civil disobedience to create awareness around the issue.

The film also highlights personal stories, including that of Ryan Zicha, who committed suicide in 2011 and Maddie Beard who committed suicide in February of this year after being bullied for being gay. Both were from Pocatello.

"I was watching the news and saw the first 44 Add the Words protesters being arrested and thought, 'Well, if I live here, I better get involved,'" Pavesic said.

She has directed and produced the film "Delusional," starring Perry King.

Gough has directed and produced five different feature-length films and multiple TV commercials, earning three Telly Awards and a regional Emmy.

"As a white straight male, I never had to deal with discrimination until I stood up to make this film," Gough said. "The process of working on this movie has highlighted personal relationships within my own life that has changed my perspective forever."

"Add the Words" was first test-screened on Father's Day in Boise.

TV news station KBOI reported that 700 people attended the test showing at the Egyptian Theater, and that the venue had only 20 seats remaining.

"Add the Words" won First Runner-Up for Audience Choice Award at the Bend Film Festival.
