PREP BOYS BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Kellogg tops Genesis Prep for Silver Valley title

MULLAN - Gus Colburn had a game-high 26 points as the Kellogg Wildcats were able to overcome a slow first-half to take home the Silver Valley Tournament championship, beating the Genesis Prep Jaguars 67-38 on Saturday at the Mullan Pavilion.

The Wildcats went into halftime leading by nine points and Kellogg coach Jeff Lambert thought that was because his team had come in overconfident.

"Genesis played real well tonight," said Lambert. "They hustled around the court and are really well coached. I liked the way they played tonight. We came out a little overconfident and it took us until the second half to step up and take over."

Ty Brearley had 11 points, Tyler Hearon eight points for Genesis Prep (2-1), which hosts Christian Heritage on Tuesday in a Mountain Christian League game at Real Life Ministries in Post Falls.

Kellogg hosts Sandpoint on Tuesday.

T.J Placencio had a game-high 23 points for Mullan.

"Our guys were working hard tonight but it just seems like we had a lid on the basket in the first half," Mullan coach Dan Fritz said. "We need to work on stuff like boxing out if we want to be successful the rest of the season."

EAST WENATCHEE, Wash. - The Vikings picked up their first win of the season, using an 18-8 run to close the first half to key a nonleague victory.

Coeur d'Alene took on three teams on the road in three straight days, losing its season opener by two to Shadle Park and by six Friday at Central Valley.

"We wanted to schedule as many quality opponents as we could," Coeur d'Alene coach Kurt Lundblad said. "We wanted to test our kids early and see where we stand. We got a lot out of it and that's why we scheduled these games."

Sophomore guard Brody Lundblad, the coach's son, was 5 for 6 from beyond the 3-point line and finished with 19 points and five assists. Colby Daniels hit 11 of 12 free throws and led all scorers with 20 points for the Vikings (1-2).

Dalton Thompson added 14 points and five rebounds for Post Falls (2-0).

"I thought West Valley tried to take us out of the things we like to do," Post Falls coach Mike McLean said. "I thought they did a good job of making the flow of the game their style. We didn't have our best offensive effort, so we've got to fix that."

Martin Herford scored 15 points for West Valley.

Post Falls plays Friday at Spanish Springs, Nev., and on Saturday at Douglas, Nev.

North Central led 49-28 after the third quarter, but Lake City went on a 20-4 run to finish the game.

"In the last six minutes of the game, we played like we should all the time," Lake City assistant coach Kelly Reed said. "We had a ton of energy, our defensive intensity was outstanding. Unfortunately, for the first 26 minutes, none of those things existed. We didn't move the ball around on offense and played very poor defense."

Point guard Riley Smith hit five 3-pointers and scored 27 points for North Central.

PENDLETON, Ore. - Carlos Collado scored a team-high 14 points, but the Bulldogs were blown out by the Bend, Ore., school in the third place game of the Pendleton tournament.

The Bulldogs (1-2) are implementing a new full-court, attacking style under new coach Kent Leiss, and at least on Saturday, it is still a work in progress. Dylan Kuzmich added 11 points and Matt Timothy 10, but the Bulldogs had trouble getting stops defensively, falling behind early and never recovering.

Assistant coach Mike Roos said it was a combination of a strong Mountain View team and a Bulldog team still trying to find its footing.

"Mountain View was a skilled team. They came out firing, made their first four 3-pointers," said Roos. "The kids are still learning to push it on offense and defense, they're not used to it. They made strides. Hopefully we start putting up some wins."

Davan Norris added eight points, Paul Sundquist six, Jake Aguirre four and Cooper Spalding and Troy Mitton two apiece to round out the Bulldog scorers.

St. Maries' original season opener on Friday was postponed as the Lumberjacks were not in school due to icy roads. No makeup date has been announced.
