SPOKANE - The Spokane Chiefs fell behind 2-0 after the first 4 minutes, 32 seconds en route to their season-high fifth straight loss, a 4-1 setback to the Seattle Thunderbirds in Western Hockey League play Sunday night before 4,642 at Spokane Arena.
The losing streak follows a season-best five-game winning streak by the Chiefs (14-12-3, 31 points), who have dropped to fourth in the five-team U.S. Division, just one point ahead of Seattle. The Chiefs have scored just seven goals in the five losses.
Riley Whittingham scored Spokane's lone goal, on the power play at 12:58 of the first period, to trip the Thunderbirds' lead to 2-1.
Nolan Volcan, Evan Wardley and Keegan Kolesar each had a goal and an assist for Seattle, which out-shot Spokane 32-25. Tyson Verhelst had 28 saves for the Chiefs, now 3-4 vs. Seattle this season.
Spokane travels to Portland on Friday to play the defending Western Conference champion Winterhawks for the first time this season.
