Law agencies plan DUI crackdown

Local law enforcement will have a bigger presence this holiday season as Columbia Falls Police, Whitefish Police, Kalispell Police, the Montana Highway Patrol and the Flathead County Sheriff’s Office participate in the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign to keep impaired drivers off the road.
From now through Jan. 1, officers will actively search for impaired drivers and add extra patrols.
“The holidays should be a happy time in our communities, so we need to get drivers who are a threat to others off the roads and streets,” Sheriff Chuck Curry said in a press release from the Department of Transportation.
“If you plan to drink, then think ahead and find a safe option that doesn’t include getting behind the wheel. You don’t want a DUI and you don’t want to be responsible for hurting anyone.”
Montana had 10,155 impaired driving arrests in 2012, according to the Department of Transportation, which offered these tips for people to help do their part to prevent impaired driving:
- Even one drink can impair judgment and reaction time, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Alcohol can enhance the side effects of medication. Avoid mixing alcohol with any medications and ask your doctor about possible consequences if you do so.
- If you plan to drink, have a sober friend do the driving or find another alternative.
- Expect your friends and family to have a sober driver and let them know it.
- Provide safe transportation for your party guests — as well as nonalcoholic beverages.
- Call 911 if you see an impaired driver.
- Buckle up every person, every time.
