Whitefish Christmas Stroll has something for everyone
This Week in the Flathead | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 10 years, 3 months AGO
Winter has arrived in Whitefish. The Whitefish Mountain Resort is open for skiing, the holiday decorations are up downtown, and all that’s left is to light the Christmas tree.
That’s happening at 6:15 Friday night as part of the annual Whitefish Christmas Stroll.
Every year the city of Whitefish comes together downtown for a true community holiday event.
“It’s become this fun family event for everyone in the valley,” according to Sarah Stewart, business manager for the Whitefish Chamber of Commerce. “You always run into people you know and everyone just has a great time.”
The main events will take place this year from 5:30 to 9 p.m. on Central Avenue in Whitefish. The street will be closed to vehicle traffic from Third Street to Railway Street. There will be events, activities and performers out in the street, including carolers, fire jugglers, and dancers. Street vendors will be set up with crafts and food. Most downtown galleries and shops will be open, offering shopping specials and promotions throughout the stroll.
This year’s event also features the third annual Shopper’s Drawing. For every $10 that shoppers spend at a local merchant during the stroll, they earn one entry into a raffle. Raffle prizes include gift cards, products, and other surprises donated by local businesses. Shoppers can enter at the Chamber of Commerce tent, which will be located on Central Avenue between Second and Third streets. The drawing will be held at 8:30 p.m.
The Whitefish Christmas Stroll offers something for community members of all ages. The family-friendly event this year will feature face-painting, a straw bale treasure hunt, wagon rides and a rock-climbing wall. Stumptown Art Studio will help people create their own ornaments.
There will also be several shops offering photo opportunities. Get a holiday picture with your pet at Tailwaggers or take an “awkward family photo” at Great Northern Brewery.
Fire abounds around downtown throughout the evening. Fire pits will be available for everyone to warm their hands, and the Village Shop will be roasting chestnuts on an open fire. The popular fire jugglers from WhiteFire will also be entertaining crowds again this year at Depot Park.
The highlight, of course, is the tree lighting at 6:15 p.m. at Depot Park, followed by a visit from Santa himself. Santa will be available throughout the evening for photos as well.
The North Valley Music School will start the evening with a recital at the First Presbyterian Church at 5 p.m. The students’ performance will continue at Montana Coffee Traders at 5:30 p.m. The street events will officially begin at 5:30 and end at 9 p.m., but Stewart said the party will likely continue throughout the evening at local bars and restaurants.
“Everyone is always in a good mood,” Stewart said. “This event really brings people together for fun and community.”
