GREAT FALLS — The Great Falls C.M. Russell Rustlers scored 11 of their 27 first-half points from the charity stripe to down the Glacier Wolfpack 53-36 in Class AA nonconference boys basketball action Friday night.
The Wolfpack (0-1) committed 19 fouls in the contest and fell behind early, trailing by 11 at halftime.
Glacier went on to shoot 32 percent from the field and was outscored 14-4 in the third quarter as CMR pulled away.
“We played hard. There’s no question on the effort, but CMR is a very good, very athletic team. Our effort was good. I thought we matched them in that capacity, but we fouled too much,” Glacier head coach Mark Harkins said.
“When you combine not making shots, fouling and playing against a good team, you’re going to lose.”
Although the Rustlers shot just 40 percent from the field, they were 75 percent from the free-throw line, going 18 for 24 to Glacier’s 11 for 22.
Sophomore post Jaxen Hashley finished with a team-high nine points and Sam McCamley added seven to pace the Wolfpack.
CMR was led by Karl Tucker II, who scored 14 points, and teammate Yancy Gagne, 13 points.
The Wolfpack is back in action on Friday at 7:30 p.m. when it entertains the Great Falls High Bison in another nonconference contest.
