Another weekend and another tournament for area wrestlers.

Columbia Falls, Flathead and Glacier head east for the C.M. Russell Holiday Classic today at Saturday in Great Falls.

Polson and Libby go west to Idaho for the Tri-State Classic in Coeur d’Alene.

Closer to home, Bigfork and Whitefish travel to Eureka for the annual Buzz Lucey Invitational.

Last weekend Columbia Falls, Flathead, Glacier at Polson were all at the Mining City Duals in Butte.

Flathead posted a 4-2 mark, beating Huntley Project and Corvallis while falling to Bozeman on the first day. That put the Braves in the championship pool for Day 2, where they lost to Havre, but came back to beat Billings West and CMR.

Flathead is 7-3 in duals to date.

Glacier posted a 3-2 mark in Butte.

The Wolfpack beat Belgrade, Corvallis and Anaconda and lost to Billings West and Sidney.

In dual action, Glacier is 3-4 on the season.

“Very happy to make the championship pool,” Flathead coach Rich Vasquez said.

“A great effort by the guys to get in there.”

Flathead and Helena Capital tied for fifth place.

Trae Vasquez, at 113 pounds, led Flathead’s wrestlers at the Mining City Duals. He was 6-0, which ups his season record to 9-1. He’s won eight times by pin and has one tech fall.

Logan, 182, was 5-1 at Butte and Dyan Guzman, 126, went 4-2.

Wilson is 8-2 on the season. Guzman improves to 6-3.

“What stood out to me overall was the improvement the kids are showing,” coach Vasquez said.

“They are beyond where I thought we would be for this time of the year.”

Regarding the dual tournament format ...

“You get a chance to see your team come together,” he said.

“The kids bond. They learn to fight for each other. They become a real team at that tournament.”

That all changes this weekend where it’s individuals going head to head against wrestlers from all classes in Montana.

“We haven’t been to a tournament like this, this year,” Vasquez said.

“This will be a new thing for the guys, especially with all the freshmen and sophomores we have on the roster. I’m excited about the weekend. I think our guys will go out there and wrestle well.”

Glacier has been led four wrestlers thus far — Justin Gibson, 8-2 at 113; Cody Decker, 8-3 at 145; Quinn Barber, 8-3 at 152; and Isaac Sanez, 8-4 at 170.

“Overall, we wrestled really hard,” Glacier coach Ross Dankers of the two days in Butte.

“I like the dual atmosphere, everyone gets excited for the team.”

He also appreciates the more traditional format in Great Falls.

“It’s good for the boys to get this individual tournament in because it’s what we’ll see in February (at state),” he said.

“It will be good for us to see some different competition.”

At the Polson Invitational back on Dec. 2, Glacier finished third behind runner-up Columbia Falls.

Columbia Falls had three individual champions at that tournament — Shonn Roberts at 138, Mikey Denison at 182 and Spencer Ross at heavyweight.

Glacier had four grapplers finish second — Gibson, Decker, Barber and Sanez.
