ATHOL - An investigation into the alleged embezzlement of money from the city of Athol has essentially wrapped, and the evidence has been given to the U.S. Attorney's Office.
"Our investigation into the matter is complete," said Kootenai County Sheriff Lt. Stu Miller.
"The case has been referred to the U.S. Attorney's Office for review and possible prosecution."
Traci Whelan said the U.S. Attorney's Office has received the investigation from the sheriff's office and the U.S. Secret Service, however it cannot comment on an active investigation.
No charges have been filed in the case yet.
Sally Hansen, who was fired in July, is a person of interest in an embezzlement case involving city funds. Hansen had served as Athol's clerk since 2009.
Hansen and her husband, Chuck, who was the lead grounds employee for the Lakeland Joint School District and served as a Timberlake Fire Protection District commissioner, fled the area after Hansen was fired, detectives said.
The KCSO received a letter in July from a local law firm, advising it has been retained by Hansen and that she "will be exercising her right to remain silent."
Athol Mayor Darla Kuhman said the city's forensic audit is complete, but she cannot comment on it yet because it could jeopardize the investigation.
"At this time, the forensic audit cannot be given to the public, as its release might impede their investigations," she said. "I do believe that we should have additional information after Christmas."
Kuhman said once the U.S. Attorney gives her the permission to release the audit, she plans to hold a public meeting to inform Athol citizens on what exactly transpired.
"We want total transparency," she said. "Once we get the OK we will make it available."
