Great Falls High rallied from down 11 points in the final four minutes to top the Glacier boys 66-62 in a Class AA nonconference basketball game on Friday night at Glacier.

The Wolfpack (0-2) led 58-47 and sat in the double bonus with 5:15 to play, but struggled to find its form on the offensive end in the game’s final minutes. The Bison (2-2) pressured Glacier on defense and forced a string of turnovers, capitalizing on the empty possessions to quickly jump back into the game.

The comeback was sparked when Bison guard Kody Torgerson hit a 3-pointer with 4:02 to play, just as Glacier fouled another Great Falls player away from the ball. A pair of free throws later, the Wolfpack lead was cut to 59-52 in one trip down the court.

The run stretched to 13-2 when Great Falls guard Lukas Vining drove into traffic and layed in an athletic bucket to tie the game at 60-60.

Wolfpack forward Jaxen Hashley drew the attention of a pair of Bison the next trip down the court and dropped a pass into the lap of Cody Norberg for an easy lay up and the lead.

But it was Vining again on the next trip down the floor, getting open in the left corner for a 3-pointer that gave the Bison the lead for good with 1:21 to play. Vining’s free throws with five seconds to play pushed the spread to four points and sealed the win for Great Falls.

“We left a shooter open, Vining’s a great shooter,” Glacier coach Mark Harkins said. “It’s a culmination of 32 minutes. We (have to) keep working and get better.”

Vining finished with 19 points. Brendan Howard had a game-high 22 points to lead Great Falls.

Sam McCamley led Glacier with 16 points and Hashley had 12 points and 12 rebounds to record his first double-double of the season. The Wolfpack outrebounded Great Falls 35-23 in the contest.

“We challenged them beforehand that they had to crash the boards,” Harkins said. “They did. All of them did.”

Glacier started the game a touch slow, scoring just two points in the first three minutes to fall behind 10-2. However, the Wolfpack started to find a rhythm and its offense started humming, going on a 12-4 run to tie the game on a 3-pointer from Dylan Ruggles at the top of the key. When the Bison answered to reclaim the lead, Taden Gilman buried another Glacier 3 to tie the score at 19-19 after the first quarter.

A pair of 3s to open the quarter gave the Wolfpack an early advantage in the second, though it was never really able to separate, falling behind 39-36 at half after going without a field goal for the final two minutes.

Glacier closed the third on a 7-0 run in the final minute, capped by a spin move from Gilman between a pair of defenders for an easy layup to give the Wolfpack a 53-45 lead.

Free throws, which allowed Glacier to stretch its lead to 11 points early in the fourth, were tough to come by down the stretch. Despite playing in the double bonus, Glacier hit 3 of 7 free throws in the final six minutes.

“I thought the kids’ effort was incredible tonight,” Harkins said.

“Their defense, that’s a great basketball team. Every guy they put on the court can score. They have some legitimate kids that are going to play in college next year.

“I’m really proud of the kids and how they battled defensively. I thought that was a pretty darn good defensive effort.”

Glacier plays again this afternoon, hosting Whitefish at 2:30 p.m.

“Our thing right now is getting better,” Harkins said. “There is no question, right now, we are better this week than we were last week. We keep improving with these games before Christmas, then when we hit the conference schedule, hopefully we’ll be OK.”
