COEUR d'ALENE - You can't spell compete without Pete.
And the head coach of the Post Falls wrestling team may have put together the first of what could be a long list of tournament championships a little later this season.
Senior Drake Foster (126 pounds), junior Tyler "T.J." Wolf (132) and senior Seth McLeod (182) won championships for the Post Falls Trojans, which ran away with the 43rd annual Tri-State Invitational team championship on Saturday at Christianson Gym on the campus of North Idaho College.
"We had a couple of really hard practices this week with some sprints and intense matches," Post Falls coach Pete Reardon said. "We really talked about competing, no matter what, and the whole team stepped up."
Post Falls totaled 202 points in capturing its first Tri-State title. The Trojans' previous best finish was third in 2012.
Moses Lake was second with 166 points.
"We've wanted this championship for so long," McLeod said. "Tri-State is a tough tournament for us. We wanted to come out, work hard and get this. We've been training super hard in the wrestling room, and it feels great."
Foster, the top seed at 126, advanced to the championship match for the third time in four years, dominated the match from start to finish, winning by a 5-2 decision over third-seeded Seth Lowen from McCall-Donnelly for his first Tri-State title.
"It feels amazing," Foster said. "All the hard work we do in the wrestling room is starting to pay off. We wrestled hard to show our coaches that we've been working hard toward something."
Wolf, seeded sixth in his Tri-State debut, trailed fourth-seeded Cam Sorensen of University High in Spokane 1-0 after the second period, took a 2-1 lead with a takedown early in the third and went to post a 5-2 decision.
"I really had nothing to lose, so I just tried to go out and wrestle as tough as I could," Wolf said. "I went as hard as I could and found a way to get it done. We've got an excellent team and are great together. Our coaches push us to be better each day, and that helps us get better in the future. Winning this just proves that anything is possible."
McLeod, who lost in the finals last year, wasted no time putting Levi Perry of Kuna on his heels, eventually earning a pin in 3:55 for the 182 title.
"It feels good to finally end up on top," McLeod said. "You've just got to ignore the fact you're in the finals and wrestle the kid the same way as you'd wrestle any other match. If you look at it, you've got to be pretty special to be in the championship match at Tri-State."
"Seth gets into matches with guys that like to try and slow things down," Reardon said. "They try to make it a conservative match. It was a little bit of a slow start, but once he got moving, he was unstoppable."
Lakeland freshman Larry Johnson fell behind 2-0 to top-seeded Chase Wickman, the top seed at 113 from Vashon Island (Wash.), eventually losing by pin in 2:23.
"I was excited to get to this tournament," Johnson said. "My goal was to place in the top five, and just took it like any other tournament. I've been to Fargo (for Junior Nationals), so I know the game. I was ready to go, but he (Wickman) caught me heavy on my feet, but I'll learn from it."
Justin Farnsworth, in his first Tri-State final, lost to Tate Orndorff of University by a 9-3 decision at 285.
"He's one of the top guys in the nation," Farnsworth said. "I didn't wrestle as well as I could have, but I thought I did a lot better than most guys could have. I could have done better, but second is good. Winning that team title, that's a big deal. One of the biggest and scariest things is that this is just the beginning of the season, and it's a really good sign of things to come. We'll go back and get better in the wrestling room and get better each week."
Johnson is the first Lakeland wrestler to advance to the finals since Brandon Richardson in 2009. Freshman William Edelblute finished sixth for Lakeland, which finished 14th.
"Larry's been working hard," Lakeland coach Rob Edelblute said. "He's been coming in with one of our seniors (Killian Estes) and Willy (Edelblute), and they have been working really hard. It goes to show, all three placed and they've got a bright future ahead of them."
Estes, who suffered a hand injury in the quarterfinals on Friday, finished sixth at 195.
Zion Dixon was fifth at 285 for Lake City, which finished 24th with 55 points.
Tyler Badetscher finished third at 152 for Timberlake, which finished tied for 33rd with 44 points.
Casey Randles finished fifth at 170 for Sandpoint.
Blake Ivie of Kellogg beat Alius De La Rosa of Post Falls in the 138-pound fifth-sixth place match.
Fred Green was named the tournament's most outstanding wrestler after winning the 138-pound title for Orting (Wash.), which claimed the small school team championship.
