COEUR d'ALENE - A doctor, a sign maker and a home builder walk into a VFW hall on New Year's Eve.

No, that's not the beginning of a bad joke - it's the focal point of a New Year's celebration at VFW Post No. 1435, located at 212 S. David Road in Spokane Valley, Wash.

Jeff Connaway, Steve Funk and Terry LaValle - a trio of local musicians from diverse backgrounds that formed the band 2nd Time Around - will help attendees ring in 2015. The group starts at 7 p.m. and will be playing what Connaway calls "country music with a flair" until midnight.

"It's a heck of a way to start out a new year," Connaway said. "It's going to be really fun."

Connaway said the band grew from a loosely formed group of musicians that liked to jam together. Funk, who was a doctor in Coeur d'Alene for 46 years before retiring, knew several of the participants and met Connaway when he needed a sign made.

"He then became aware that I played music too and asked me to join this group," Connaway said. "Then Terry was asked to join the group by a different person and also started showing up at these sessions."

The three quickly formed a bond through music and Connaway said they decided to add a little more focus to what was often just "jam sessions" with a variety of musicians.

"We started getting together by ourselves, not for any real purpose other than the love of the music and to have fun," Connaway said. "Music makes life fun and we've been working pretty steadily at it for about two years now."

The band plays primarily country songs - music Connaway said has been in the mix for a while - as well as blues, folk and classic rock covers. The show will feature a mix of original tunes written by Connaway and covers of songs attendees will easily recognize, and can sing with as well.

In August, the group performed at the VFW Hall and Connaway said the music was so well-received that it was asked to perform again on New Year's Eve.

He said he hopes this first concert will allow the group to play more shows in Coeur d'Alene in the future.

"We're all at the age now that we have the time to really try to make stuff happen with this," Connaway said. "Hopefully that means playing a few more shows in town."
