- COEUR d'ALENE INN-VITATIONAL HOLIDAY CLASSIC

COEUR d'ALENE - Who said it's too late to exchange Christmas presents?

Before the Post Falls-Georges P. Vanier Secondary matchup in Monday's opening round of the Coeur d'Alene Inn-Vitational, the Towhees from Courtneay, B.C., gave each of the Trojans a commemorative pin.

Then once the game began, Post Falls gave a lesson to their Canadian opponents, forcing dozens of turnovers en route to a 82-32 win at North Idaho College.

"Their level of play was too much for us," Vanier coach Larry Street said. "We came down here because we're going to play kids who are coached since they're 5, 6 years old. I have kids who are athletic, but they're green (on the basketball court)."

A poor-shooting first half by the Trojans (8-0) allowed the Towhees to hang around for the first 10 minutes, despite 13 Post Falls steals and forced turnovers to that point.

Post Falls shot 12-for-38 from the floor before halftime, and back-to-back baskets by Vanier standout Anders Storgaard, followed by Ben Jungwirth's 3-pointer, pulled the Towhees within 14-12 with 5:05 remaining in the second quarter.

A drive to the basket by Blake McLean ignited a 22-2 Trojan run, finished off with a behind-the-back drive through the lane by Max McCullough, putting Post Falls in command 36-14 just before intermission.

The junior point guard was one of four Trojans in double-figures, scoring 13 of his game-high 17 points in the first half as Post Falls coach Mike McLean substituted liberally, using all 10 of his players.

"We usually go 11 deep - one of our kids is on vacation with his family - so it's not unusual for us to have contributions from a lot of people," McLean said. "We didn't shoot very well in the first half, but we took good shots and shared the ball very well, so we knew eventually they'd start to fall for us."

Jack Millsap (14 points), Dalton Thompson (12 points), Zach Hillman (12 points) and Jake Blakney (team-high seven rebounds) all contributed solid efforts for Post Falls, which faces Lapwai tonight in a 6:15 tournament semifinal.

Storgaard, an exchange student from Denmark, had 14 points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots for Vanier (13-4).

"I thought he had very much a man's game out there," McLean said of Storgaard. "He was clearly their best player."

Street had similar compliments for McLean's squad.

"I was told they're good, and they showed it today," Street said of the Trojans. "They're a strong team that's very well-coached."

Coeur d'Alene 70, Ridgeview 65, OT: For the first 24 minutes of their opening round game, the Vikings seemed destined to fight back through the consolation bracket.

That final quarter and four minutes of overtime was enough to get the job done though.

Tony Naccarato scored 21 points and Colby Daniels added 15, including five in overtime as the Vikings held off the Ravens of Redmond, Ore.

"I told the guys at halftime that we needed to play with more energy and pick up the pace a little bit," Coeur d'Alene coach Kurt Lundblad said. "That first half, we were really sloppy and had way too many turnovers and they played really well. They were very well coached, organized and shot the ball really well."

Ridgeview led 45-29 midway through the third quarter before Coeur d'Alene rallied to trim the deficit to 50-48 with 3:13 remaining.

"We dug ourselves a hole and it didn't look good for a while there," Lundblad said. "But the kids bounced back."
