- COEUR d'ALENE WINTER CLASSIC

COEUR d'ALENE - It doesn't have quite the same atmosphere of a state girls basketball tournament yet, but the teams in the first Coeur d'Alene Winter Classic might be some to watch when that time comes in a few weeks.

In the tournament, Lake City beat Sandpoint 56-26 and Mountain View High of Meridian ran past Post Falls 78-52, setting up a semifinal game today at 5 p.m.

Sandpoint will face Post Falls today at noon in a consolation game.

Lake City 56, Sandpoint 26: Clarissa Smith had 14 points and seven rebounds for the Timberwolves, which beat the Bulldogs for a second time in three matchups this season.

"I think it show where we're going as a program," Lake City coach Bryan Kelly said. "The first time we played them up there, they beat us and we didn't play well. The second time, it was a little closer. The girls are continuing to build on what we're trying to do and they came out and played with super intensity."

Lake City (10-1) held Sandpoint guard Madi Schoening to six points.

"Madi's a great player and it was our goal to take her out of the game and make someone else beat us," Kelly said. "Olivia Maryon has done a great job defensively the last two times we've played Sandpoint. She knows her role and does a great job of stopping people and it's a great attribute to have."

Keara Simpson had six points and 10 rebounds for Lake City, which hadn't played since Dec. 20 in a tournament in Boise.

"I thought that Boise trip was good for us to get on the road and see what other teams we'll face and get rolling as a team," Kelly said.

Elani Williams scored 11 points for Sandpoint (7-5).

Mountain View used a 13-3 run late in the first quarter and pulled away from Post Falls.

"We've got a great team and great team chemistry," Mountain View coach Connie Skogrand said. "They've been playing together as a group for two years, and some for three years. The kids enjoy playing with each other, and it shows on the court. They work hard and it was a complete and total team effort."

Alyssa Case scored 15 points and Taeli Carrillo had 13 points for Mountain View (10-0).

"Destiny has a lot of kids around her that work well with her," Skogrand said.
