COEUR d'ALENE WINTER CLASSIC: Vikings, T-Wolves fall in semis

COEUR d'ALENE - After trailing 22-4 after the first quarter, Coeur d'Alene could not recover in a 61-37 loss to Rocky Mountain of Meridian in the first Coeur d'Alene Winter Classic.

Rocky Mountain plays Mountain View of Meridian at noon for the tournament title.

"We didn't handle the ball very well," Coeur d'Alene coach Dale Poffenroth said. "After the first quarter, the game settled down. Once you get in that hole, it's hard to dig yourself out of it."

Emily Callahan scored a team-high 14 points for the Vikings (8-4).

Coeur d'Alene takes on Lake City today at 4 p.m.

Rachel Fielder scored 17 points for Rocky Mountain, which faces Mountain View in today's championship game at noon.

Mountain View 67, Lake City 43: Destiny Slocum, who has verbaled to the University of Washington, scored 23 of her game-high 27 points in the second half to push the Mavericks into today's championship game.

"She made some moves I've never seen before," Lake City coach Bryan Kelly said. "She's an unselfish player and really makes her teammates better. I thought we battled and competed and didn't let Slocum hurt us until late in the game. Then we had some turnovers and they got some easy looks. She's a very, very good player."

Lake City trimmed the deficit to six points with five minutes remaining.

"It was a good effort by us," Kelly said. "They outrebounded us and had 12 offensive rebounds in the first half. Our girls, they're disappointed, but they know we can compete with anyone."

Whitney Meier scored 12 points and Keara Simpson had nine points and 10 rebounds for Lake City (10-2).

Alyssa Case had 10 points for Mountain View (11-0).

Post Falls 66, Sandpoint 40: Sam Runkle scored 13 points to lead the Trojans past the Bulldogs in a consolation game.

Post Falls (10-3) will face Lapwai, who beat Grangeville on Tuesday in the consolation championship game today.

"It was a good team win," Post Falls coach Marc Allert said. "We got contributions from everybody. We did a pretty good job defensively. Madi had to work for her points and she did a good job."

Madi Schoening scored 18 points for Sandpoint (7-6), which faces Grangeville in a consolation game today at 10 a.m.
